View Full Version : Seeking co-location...
Josh Stein 01-02-2002, 07:50 AM I found this: http://tera-byte.com/colo.html and was wondering if there are any similar services (to plan b) in the U.S. They are located in Canada and I am worried about sending my server out of the country... Any places in Connecticut? What are your opinions on colocating? What places do recommend for speed, bandwith, support, reliability, pricing, etc?
THANKS!!!

There are a heap of places you can colo at in the US. You'll find a lot of companies here offer it.
www.rackmy.com (Inflow/St Louis)
www.pwebtech.com (Nac.net/NYC or NJ, I forget.)
www.venturesonline.com (Their own center)
www.affordablecolo.com (A few locations, one of them being Dallas, at Colo4Dallas)
They all have a good reputation and are quite speedy.
Sorry if i've missed any, these are just ones that popped up in my head first

Hey, I'm an -exConnecticutian as well. Just thought I'd mention that I had a server colo'd up there in Canada (at Tera-byte) and there wasn't a problem. Took a bit for the shipping back (once I stopped using this server), but other than that...
Go HUSKIES! :D
Mike the newbie 01-02-2002, 06:26 PM Hi Josh...
I'm also from Connecticut (at the other end of Black Rock Turnpike from you). I'm currently putting together a 1U FreeBSD server to send to Tera-Byte. I have a RaQ3 there now, but I want the higher flexibility of my own server.
The trans-border shipping does raise a slight concern for me, but I figure I'll give it a try. Tera-Byte has been excellent for my RaQ, so I have a history with them.
If other colo-sites would offer a bandwidth-only costing model, I may consider another vendor. But for now it looks like TB.
Josh Stein 01-02-2002, 06:33 PM Yeah, it looks like TB is the best choice. I was hoping to find some other providers that offered approximately the same pricing model than them but no luck. Other providers are looking for hundreds for bandwith + rental space, etc.
What speeds, reliability, etc are you getting from TB? What websites you hosting with them, so I can take a peak? If only they had a datacenter in the US, that would kick ass.
Mike, whats your AIM or ICQ, if ya dont mind chattin?
Josh Stein 01-02-2002, 06:40 PM Here are the specs on the server I would like to co-locate. I rather keep my Dell 1400 as an in house server here at my home and it makes it easier if I co-locate a rack server...

will have more ram than that ;)
Another question I have is what happens if the server needs a reboot or something? What if hardware fails, will dell go and fix it where it is located?
Thanks!!!
bombino 01-02-2002, 07:58 PM I'm not familiar with Tera-Byte, but most colocation providers will reboot a server for free on request (we do). Some of the better colocation providers actually provide you with a web-based interface to their power strip, enabling you to do all of that yourself (pretty neat, eh :D).
And I don't think Dell provides onsite repairs in Canada, although I certainly may be wrong. Don't hold me to that. ;)
hi, whats the rack fee with plan b? I don't see it...
Mike the newbie 01-03-2002, 06:02 PM There is no rack fee with TB's plan B colo.
