Greetings all! Happy New Year and all that...

I'm wanting to help out a local group that helps the homeless. They are currently using a ****ty service with pop-ups and no domain name.

What I want to do is give them some of my extra space (I have much more than I need at this point.), get a domain for them and point it at a sub-domain on my site.

I don't think their bandwith is very high so I forsee no problems there but I figure they will want some kind of access via ftp so what are my security concerns? I really don't have much server level experience so I'm throwing this out there to see if I'm missing anything that I should be concerned about... I want to do some good but I don't want to get screwed in the process.

You all are wonderful and I am so happy that places like this still exist on the internet. The relentless drumbeat of commerce rules so much of the place these days... It does my heart good to know that people will help each other out just for the hell of it!

access via ftp
I don't think he/she needs space. From what I can tell, he/she has a shared account and can create subdomains, and there may or may not be a way to add FTP users.

I'm not exactly sure what kind of set up your hosts uses, but in general, it is possible to point a domain to space within a domain and have more or less secure FTP access to only that part.

If you can create an FTP account (a user off your domain I suppose for this case), then it is possible and easy to point a domain to that space using various free DNS services on the web, or your host may be willing to set this up for you (hopefully free, but maybe for a small one-time fee).

Why don't you email your current host and ask for an additional FTP account/sub domain. Explain to them its purpose, and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help.

Doesn't CPanel offer that? Maybe I'm just smoking crack. :)

Through cpanel, generally, if you setup a subdomain & an FTP account by the same name, that FTP account will only have access to the subdomain. Further, if you park a domain on that subdomain, you can ftp to "parked.tld" use the user/pass setup & FTP away just like it was your own account.

So, back to the original question, you just need to ask your host what they offer.

Thanks for your replies. I think that I now have something totally different to offer these people. Two different providers have offered to help me out; one with a domain registration and the other with server space. Both of these are doing this for free. All I can say is wow! I am impressed and touched by these unsolicited offers of assistance.
