Thinking of running an ad on google, 7 days worth at an estimated 1000 clicks per day.
What experiences of google advertising have people had? Was it worth it and what sort of conversion rate could I hope for.
I know peoples experiences vary widely but I'd like to hear any info, experiences or tips that people care to share.

Unless it's highly targetted you'll probably wont get a very good click to sales ratio...

Its focused fairly specifically.
Hell, even 1% would do :) It'd be a start and it would more than cover costs.

What we experience from Google Adwords was just Fraud Clicks from people that are running Adsense and want money where they click their own ads....
We have since stopped advertising on Google.

Even that would be tough, firstly you need to get the clicks, then you need to make the sale... 1% would be a great ratio.

Whats the old rule of thumb for advertising, expect 1% of 1% lol.
I dont want to plow loads of cash into unsuccessful advertising but at the same time I'm not going to get noticed doing nothing, same old dilemma.

All you can do is give it a try. There is no best advertising solution for everyone.
Some have had great success using google. Others have had zero.
So, give it a shot and let us know how you make out. :)

Yes from our analysis we get around 0.5% to 0.1% click throughs from Google on the ADsense network.

Just rolling up to getting started, mabye live in a couple of weeks.
got to spend some time digging around for places to pitch services in.
Been toying with sponsorship idea, give an account and if that person refers x amount of sales in a given period of time that stay for x amount of time they get their years hosting free. Something like that anyway, also was considering heavily discounted rates to charitable orgs etc if they have advertising on mainpage.
Trying to find out how the free sites automatically include banners on account holders pages, tried digging around and asking many times with slim success.

Sponsoring has never worked for me. Discounts to non-profit might be something to consider tho.

Actually, a lot of people are very happy with their AdWords campaigns - as with every other form of advertising, it takes money and time to experiment.
However, the only two PPC search engines that I know are capable of delivering the results for web hosting are Google and Overture. There are a ton of others that could potentially work out for you, as well (payperclicksearchengines.com lists over 500 of them), but these are the ones you should begin with.
