View Full Version : Tera-Byte server slow? Help needed

Hi, folks -

Sorry for the host-specific question, but I was hoping to get some correlation from WHT folks...

For the last two weeks or so HTTP connections to my site have been slow. Incredibly slow - my index page sometimes takes upwards of two minutes to load on DSL.

The page is basically static with a couple of very small text includes, and is hosted with Tera-Byte on chrom - I think that's the name of the server. I've opened plenty of tickets with Tera-Byte on the problem and they've been pretty unresponsive - "we've looked into it", "there's nothing wrong on our end", etc. But, I've checked my site from other machines on different ISPs, so I'm pretty sure the problem isn't originating from my end.

Here's a traceroute:
1 192.168.111.123 (192.168.111.123) 2.296 ms 2.207 ms 1.825 ms
2 wnpgmb01dc2.mts.net (205.200.28.30) 19.629 ms 19.174 ms 16.055 ms
3 wnpgbr27-v406.mts.net (205.200.78.242) 18.767 ms 18.965 ms wnpgbr27-v405.mts.net (205.200.78.226) 32.861 ms
4 wnpgbr01-g01-101.mts.net (205.200.28.66) 18.764 ms 17.897 ms 27.358 ms
5 wnpgbr02-f100-102.mts.net (205.200.28.83) 17.901 ms 19.116 ms 17.886 ms
6 206.186.1.217 (206.186.1.217) 46.148 ms 44.135 ms 42.72 ms
7 core-spc-cal-1-serial2-1.sprint-canada.net (204.50.251.66) 45.06 ms 80.597 ms 49.683 ms
8 204.50.128.153 (204.50.128.153) 107.937 ms 123.392 ms 170.794 ms
9 204.50.251.133 (204.50.251.133) 253.081 ms 81.772 ms 80.177 ms
10 core1-s5-1.edm.tera-byte.com (207.107.204.162) 92.744 ms 85.026 ms 88.404 ms
11 cat6006-vlan12.edm.tera-byte.com (216.234.160.34) 88.568 ms 85.234 ms 85.845 ms

(Two of the routers times are suspicious (hops 8 and 9), but I'm kind of ignorant about these things - I don't know if they ARE the problem or are just contributing to it.)

DNS is resolving, and SSH / SFTP connections are fine, so I'm pretty sure that it's web server related. But, could some folks here take a look at the hub page for my site and let me know how fast it loads for them?

BTW, the total page weight (include the large "baywindow" graphic) is just over 26k.

The URL is http://www.beatnikpad.com

Thanks, and happy new year!
Neil

the ping, traceroute times are not super slow, but it seems as if it might be a server load problem....

Could the w3.org link be slowing you down?

I would say its a server load problem. Possibly apache configuration. Its like your being thrown into a queue waiting for other peoples requests to finish.

First of all, thanks all for checking!

I suppose it could be the W3.org image that might be slowing stuff down a bit. The main reason I asked was because I wanted to be sure that I wasn't nuts... it was really annoying me.

At any rate, I'm moving my stuff off of Tera-byte to MCHost, so that problem should hopefully (fingers crossed) go away...

Thanks, all!

Traceroutes are not permitted beyond that firewall. Your traceroute client is supposed to return an administratively prohibited error, but it seems like it's misinterpereting the response and just showing a loop instead.

I checked with another traceroute client, and you are correct.

Thanks for the assist.

Hi I also host a site with Tera Byte, its been about 3 months now and have generally been impressed with the overall speed and uptime, can't comment on support haven't used it yet.

One thing I really notice is the time it takes for sites to load (I live in sticks miles from a Telco switching station so am stuck with a 28.8 connection and can only dream of a 56 K ) anyway I checked out your page and it loaded fast enough for me.

By the way you said the page was just over 26K, I did a quick count including all the graphics and got over 100K (hope I added right) quit a large page especially over a 28.8 connection.

Anybody out there in the same situation as me stuck with 28.8 connections and no way of getting cable or ADSL. Anybody using satellite ?

Satelite ping time is bad!. It is like in the 1000+, I know someone who has it and it is like so slow on ping times. I pinged our server and others and I'm like WOW!. Slow.

Hi

I just try your website..it loads in around 5 secs..no delay encountered...I am over in SEA side....perhaps the problem has been resolved....just to let you know....

Cheers

Hey, my site seems to be on chrom to (I'm not an expert but when i login to ssh it says, username@chrom) and it has been slow. It is fast at the moment but it is 4:48 am ET, and the load averages are a a low 1.20. They can get pretty high above 2.5 and sometimes even above 3.

This server specifically can get very slow after 11:00 AM all the way to like 12:30 AM. (I just got a dedicated server of my own so i'm not too worried.)

Yeah... as I said I finally got fed up with it and moved. Tera-byte has been pretty good to me, but the last two to three weeks have been really, really annoying.

I can understand when support can't find the problem, but I know that I've tested everything from as many perspectives as possible to try and narrow down the problem. I really do think the servers are just getting overloaded.

Plus, that one Sprint router in my traceroute does seem to be really flaky - not Tera-byte's fault, but still contributing to my angst.

Run "top" from the SSH prompt, and post what you see... it'll give an indication of the server load etc.

Just FYI, most routers are designed to process ICMP/traceroutes at a low priority, meaning when there is more important traffic to process, you'll see an occasional jump in one or two of the probes. This doesn't mean the connection is lagged or the router's flaky or that there is any problem at all, it just means the router had more important traffic to process first.

Odd ping times in the middle of a traceroute don't usually mean anything if the end of the route has a good ping. The only time you should be concerned about the middle of the route is when the last hop has high latency or packet loss.

I have used satalite and it does have very slow ping times, but the overall performace is pretty good (600-700 kbps) on the down and only about (50-100 kbps) on the up. Basically you get the performance you need if you have no other alternative. Definately faster than dial up
