View Full Version : can`t find a host ...
Macphisto 11-08-2000, 03:46 PM I searched the web for awhile and also this board. I have some requirements and are not able to find a host to fit them all. Maybe i ask too much? :)
At the moment i`m with a Alabanza Host but need some more options. Okay ... here is what i`m looking for:
- 100-150 MB Space
- around 8-10GB free/month and extra traffic around 3-5$/GB
- 10 POP3 incl. SMTP capabilities
- PHP3/4 (with GDlib would be great)
- Mysql Database (with PHPmyadmin)
- at least 5 mailing lists
- shell access
- capability to use 3 pointer Domains -> subdir
- Subdomains
- at least 3 FTP accounts
- full CGI, Controlpanel (maybe like Alabanza hosts?)
My traffic at the moment is around 5GB but i need the option to use more w/o changing the plan because my site will be expanded soon.
If possible all this for up to 15$
Any suggestions for a reliable host that fulfill these requirement?
thanks for any suggestion
Matthias

Have you looked at http://www.hostrocket.com ?

I checked them out and the plans are great but does not offer all that i need. Maybe i have to think to restrict my requirements. What i really need are those pointer doms and good prices for extra traffic. I will check this again with the ppl on rockethost.

I checked them too in the last days. But i missed the pointers again and SMTP on their site. Or did they not show all features on the webhosting site? I think i must really cut off my wishes. I see both companys are highly recommended here and i don`t want to end somewhere with many features but also troubles
Chicken 11-08-2000, 07:28 PM SMTP is not always offered. It's one of those things that I wouldn't cross out a host for, if they didn't offer it, but I realize it is nice to have. $15/mo is about the minimum I think you'll find for 10 gigs of traffic, domain pointers and subdomains. Really anything under $15, and I'd start wondering. Will think about it during the boring class I have to take tomight.

Site5 appears to provide what you need and close enough to the price range you specified. Not sure they provide smtp, but I think they do. They've got the three pointers you were looking for and 50 subdomains for their webmaster plan.
Not sure how great they are with support, you'd need to search the forums here and at the other host forums for more feedback.
I suggest you to use SMTP via netzero.net. It works with dial-up modem. You can use the your ISP's pop path but type in smtp field: smtp.netzero.net. It works like charm :), don't know if that what you meant.

Just came over this site. Looks great but anyone know them here? Any good or bad experiences?

Just checked this out but it works not for me :(
NoJokes 11-09-2000, 08:56 AM wantsomegetsome:
WHOA, 1gig webspace & 17gig/mo transfer = $17/mo ???
what's that? That's impossible... I don't like jokes
Get a decent and SERIOUS webhost, forget wantsomegetsome

Chicken 11-09-2000, 09:58 AM How funny! I did some checking on wantsome at Sitepoint. I wouldn't have remembered that (thanks Nam!). What to look for in the at thread (and specifically in my traceroute), is that wantsome either leases a server at *****, or resells their plans (or both). It wouldn't be my first choice. While CI has been under fire several times, and I'm sure they have plenty of clients, I put them more in the same catagory as Communitech. They aren't a bad choice, just nowhere near my first choice.
Re: SMTP and Netzero... yes, this worked fine for me as well (but it was quite a bit ago when I did this).

thanks for the input. I did not check this forum before
Macphisto 11-11-2000, 12:33 PM I just want to thank all ppl here for the input. Finally i decided to go with tera-byte.com for the maindomain. I will search around for another account for my other 2 domains. With them i don`t need much traffic so it can be so hard to find a plan that fit`s my needs :)

Chicken 11-11-2000, 12:46 PM May I suggest a starting point be this thread:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053
which I started, so that our members can network a bit. There are many fine hosts listed here, some old, some new!
