GRUMBLE 01-01-2002, 04:57 PM hello,
i hope this hasnt been asked before too often. i quickly browsed through some old threads, but didnt find anything.
so, what i am looking for is a very cheap LAMP host, preferably located in europe, but it's not a must.
with cheap i mean < 3$ month.
thank you very much!
Chicken 01-01-2002, 09:55 PM Am I the only one who doesn't know what a LAMP host is?
NetXL 01-01-2002, 09:56 PM LAMP
Hehe..
I have absolutely no idea, never heard of it.
Grumble, care to let us know what it is?
JustinK 01-01-2002, 10:03 PM I wanna guess:
Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python?
lol... I'm only going off what came up for the one thing google found.
NetXL 01-01-2002, 10:11 PM Herm
Sounds possible. I was thinking it's some kind of server application. :D
Like Perl/PHP/ASP etc..
Herm.
TradeViceroy 01-01-2002, 11:12 PM Heh...when he said LAMP...I was thinking of the military equipment in US Navy helicopters. =)
Anyhow, do tell what it means! Maybe then we can help you out.
bombino 01-02-2002, 12:18 AM LoL -- I thought I was the dumb one. Here's my guess -- some type of streaming media or game protocol. I dunno -- it hasn't been said yet.
madmatty 01-02-2002, 12:42 AM Try the local council. They put streetlamps on the curbside. What about a table lamp? No room left on the desk?
webarama 01-02-2002, 01:08 AM LAMP (Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP)
cbaker17 01-02-2002, 02:07 AM We can host your lamp, although lamps depending on the size can range in the 4u - 6u range. In addition there is an additional power surcharge if you require us to leave the lamp on at night...
thanks

Do you have redundant power? I don't want any black outs :(

What, no 99.999% lamp uptime guarantee?
Of course he'll need the lamp on at night, otherwise he'll trip over everything and bump his head :D
Chicken 01-02-2002, 03:22 AM I hope GRUMBLE is just a username and he doesn't take offense to this and GRUMBLE in real life ;) He/she will probably wonder what everyone is smokin'.
GRUMBLE 01-02-2002, 05:45 AM okok :)
yes, first of all, GRUMBLE is just a nick name and is derived from my real name. it has nothing to do with the english word "to grumble".
and yes, LAMP is Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
i thought this would be a familiar expression around here. ;)
NetXL 01-02-2002, 06:26 AM I must be out of touch with this new age hosting lingo :(
GRUMBLE 01-02-2002, 07:28 AM what you think about http://www.1uhost.com/
looks good to me.

Is it just me or will you not require a backup BULB for your LAMP solution - as a blow out during normal operation would cause trips during BULB replacement.
Unless this particular solution comes with an emergancy TORCH addon??
anybody offering BULB/TORCH addons at a reasonable price??

How about hotswappable globes?
Or load balanced?
cbaker17 01-02-2002, 11:53 AM Due to the amount of interest we have had in LAMP HOSTING i would like to clerify a few things:
Lamp Reboots are free as long as the lamp is a clap on clap off model, any physical touching of the lamp in an additional fee...
Managed services such as bulb replacement, LAMP monitoring, and backup lighting, are an extra charge.
Thank You
bobcares 01-02-2002, 12:45 PM A silly question... but something for which I still haven't found an answer. Why do you want a hosting package for < $3...
Why not spend some more on a good reliable hosting service which would last for some time. The <$3 ones would not last for very long I guess.
Have a great day :)
regards
amar
GordonH 01-02-2002, 12:52 PM Hello
Thats an interesting point :)
There is definitely a market for very cheap hosting.
From our own research it has to have lots of bandwidth and cost less than $35 before people will buy it in any quantity.
We do cheap plans but they have limited features and we sell very, very few of them.
Time to get a server at Rackshack ............

Charles, not if you get one of these new-fangled 1U lamps:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/fun-stuff/3903.shtml
I can fit 42 of these in a standard rack :D!
cbaker17 01-02-2002, 02:12 PM I would suggest against those, heat build up is the number one cause of LAMP failure, a 4u - 6u space would disperse heat build up quite a bit better then a 1u space with a 1u lamp in it.
The Laughing Cow 01-02-2002, 02:20 PM Sorry to hijack a thread but I am looking for a dedicated LAMP. I'm looking to see if something perhaps 500W is available? I would need to have LAMPOS 6.4 installed, Chrome switching, ISO compliant surge protection, CHAP compatible, Would i be able to get something that is can run EIGRP compliance. It would need to be able to shift 5000 Terrawatt hours. What would i be looking at monthly? Annually? Should I just get one of those radioshack (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F002%5F003%5F012%5F000&product%5Fid=42%2D3069)
JustinK 01-02-2002, 02:25 PM Poor Grumble. His innocent thread sent to the great beyond.
To Grumble: What specs do you absolutely NEED? It helps people find you a fairly decent host. Also what is the absolute most you will spend on a host per month?
GRUMBLE 01-02-2002, 02:54 PM thanks justink. ;)
well, as i already said, must is: PHP,MySQL and lets say an email-box and 20Megs space with 1Gig transfer.
3$ max per month.
bombino 01-02-2002, 08:49 PM If you host your LAMP with us, we will point a Webcam at the rack, so you can view your lamp from anywhere in the world. :)
knockingknee 01-03-2002, 01:09 PM What abt 34sp.com
haven't used them but they are cheap (just 1 pound p/m)
and in UK

Webhostdir lists at least three $3.xx hosts, but none for sub $3.

I really thought it was a lamp this guy was after. After all they have toasters & such that connect the the internet now? Why not lamps?
Now, we have a site that hosts with us called, twistedgifts.com and they sell Lava Lamps.
Does this qualify us as a LAMP Host ..
Just couldn't resist!
:D
BulbMaster 01-03-2002, 11:18 PM Unfortunately early today the Bulb went on our website, however we are still live on the old url, while the main site moves from DonHosts back to UkReg.
