Dedicated Server Hosting
In regards to tech support, what servicing is free and what would we need to pay an technician for.
For example, if I were unable to communicate with the box due to software misconfiguration, post reboot, a software upgrade, or a complete reinstall, will tech support fix this?
Would I have to pay extra for any or all of these services ?
If there was a simple misconfiguration where I have locked remote access out, or forgot to setup telnet/FTP services how much would this cost?
I am considering hosting with one of the 'cheaper' host including rackshack.

Some of the stuff like a reboot might not be possible for any tech to do, as sometimes a physical reboot is required, which can only be done by the hosting company.
I'm not to sure what you're asking in your post, are you looking at going with Rackshack and then hiring your own tech?? OR are you asking what do the technical support people at RS support for free and what you've got to pay for?
You might be better off asking that question at RS's forum, or check out their website.
If you're worried about not being able to manage the server, then you might want to start of with 'Managed Hosting' first.

to clarify
what I am asking is basically how much should I reasonably expect to be paying for tech support for a dedicated server. I do not plan on hiring my own tech, but using the NOC's tech support
I think it is very possible that there will be situations where the box doesn't restart remote services after a reboot, or that I may lock myself out of the box, or possbily need a reinstall.
How much does all this cost ? Does rackshack do this for free or do I have to pay their tech support for say 2 hours for a reinstall. Do techs generally charge if they have to log in to the console ?
I couldn't find any of these answers in the 'additional expenses' thread of running a webhosting business.
Thanks in advance

Every provider varies on these charges. As for rackshack, I'd email them and ask what the exact terms are, what you can expect for free, what you'd have to pay for. Often you get a certain amount of reboots (for example), then pay per hour after that. I think I've read that RS will restore the box once for free, after that I'd imagine their per hour charge kicks in, but as I said, best to ask them.

Well... in general providers have two classifications of support.
1) The first is when something goes wrong with a pre-installed software. I.e. the control panel has a bug and does something to the system, that is generally fixed for free.
2) The second is when the client breaks something, depending on how strict the host is, most of the time if its something major or more than a quick fix, expect to get charged.

Generally it goes like this. If you have a server at a high price. Then the support looks after every thing except any messups done by you.
In cases where the server costs are low then you look after everything.
But this is just a general working. Every provider would vary.
As many have suggested before the best is to the ask the provider.
Have a great day :)
