Any advantage of having reverse dns and how to set it up? ffeingol 01-01-2002, 01:53 AM "normal" dns maps a host name to an IP address. Reverse DNS maps an IP address to a host name. A lof of secure sites will do a reverse DNS lookup to try and prevent fraud etc. Frank porcupine 01-01-2002, 03:33 AM Reverse dns is also essential for getting on services such as IRC (Internet Relay Chat) although you may not want your users on it (script kiddie magnets and such). Personally I also find reverse to be a little more comforting, and has a air of professionalism. It shows you're one of the big boys, and not running the webpages (or whatever services being viewed) off something like your home dsl, etc. Planet Z 01-01-2002, 02:32 PM Originally posted by spiderman Can someone tell me what does it do? Any advantage of having reverse dns and how to set it up? Since the reasons for reverse DNS were already posted... Usually the only way to setup reverse DNS is through your upstream. You normally don't have control of your own reverse DNS. Your upstream may transfer authority of reverse DNS to you if you use a larger IP block (class c or greater usually). |
