View Full Version : corruption of images?
honging 12-31-2001, 04:41 AM it might be just my imagination, but my RAQ sometimes corrupts images for no random reason. i'll just try to view them and they'll be slightly whacked. anyone else have any experience wiht this and any possible solutions?
Pilgrim 12-31-2001, 07:30 AM Make sure you upload them in binary, not in ascii
honging 12-31-2001, 12:41 PM Yes, I do upload the in binary. The images will be ok for a while, but it seems as if they randomly become corrupted. And no, no script is operating in the directory, nor are they modified or run in any way (besides being shown on hte website)
Chicken 12-31-2001, 03:29 PM I've never experienced that, but maybe you'll find someone else who has (been running RaQs for errrrr... about 2 years-ish maybe).
just1post 12-31-2001, 03:55 PM Sounds very odd that it randomly 'whacks' your images. The only experiance I've ever had with something like this is where I either
1) uploaded them in ascii
2) an error occured when FTPing them and only half the img was uploaded.
otherwise, I really don't know what else there is...
honging 12-31-2001, 04:35 PM here's an example
http://www.neopages.net/roy/photography/dec_04/t_04.jpg
notice how the bottom portion of the image is lightly whacked?
:-/
Chicken 12-31-2001, 05:07 PM That is very similar to an ascii uploaded image. Very typical of what happens. I know you said you didn't upload it this way, but I don't know what else to tell you. This happens server wide? All users complaining of this?
honging 12-31-2001, 06:25 PM well my ftp client (ws_ftp pro) is set to upload all images in binary automatically.
yes, it does this server-wide.. its not common though. ithappens with images that are stored on the server for a long time (weird). its really sporadic and seems extremely random.
iplexx 01-01-2002, 08:24 AM i'm not very in ext2 fs, but maybe your harddisk is defective (something like defective sectors), and is corrupting your pictures this way?
maybe you test your HD by running a file system check (/sbin/fsck or /sbin/e2fsck)?
Andre 01-04-2002, 06:01 AM One of my customers had the same problems that you are describing. They were also running the same FTP software that you are running. I tried the software and found out that it doesn't really work sometimes for no reason. So, try the FlashFXP software instead. I'm running that one and I have never had the same problems that I got when I used the ws-ftp software.
One question: are you and your server behind any firewalls?
/Andre

You are not, by any chance, viewing them with AOL when they look porked are you???
I recently installed "Almost On Line" on my system so I could view what a few of my clients see, since they go to the site via their AOL accounts.
I had forgotten about the image compression that AOL uses and yech! It would compress a jpeg that I'd optimized at a 12 compression that was about 59 k (a photograph) and would take it down to about 19kb and it absolutely looked like crap!
Knowing how many visitors are coming in via AOL, I'm considering adding a special "AOL Visitor Instruction" link to explain to AOL'ers how to turn off the compression and then refresh while holding shift so they can see the actual image quality.
That AOL caches our pages/images is questionably legal, that they alter those images is CLEARLY against our copyright notice..
Shortness
PS.. whoops... (this is an edit) just looked at your sample image, that is not the AOL disruption... that looks like an ASSKEY upload problem.. another thought..
honging 01-04-2002, 12:53 PM nope. no AOL for me :-D
i'm believing to think my hard drive might be slightly corrupted in some places...

Where did you get this software?
it sounds interesting...

Well... <almost blushing> Since unlike WebTV, AOL does not have a valid "emulator" for their browser, and my client had several questions that I was pulling my hair out over (this doesn't work, this looks funny sort of q's) What I did was actually sign up for a free 45 day account.. Sort of funny though, I connect via my DSL and sign in to AOL... Then it sends me through their proxy server (which was another process I wanted to investigate) to get to the sites..
An emulator would be fantastic though! I'm shocked at what a stock setup in AOL makes websites look like however!
I feel they are cheating their customers by compressing website graphics in the name of "speeding up performance"... <smacks self on forehead> Yea... right!
I did answer a couple of my questions though, I've not had time to investigate completely.. I'd thought that they completely cached a site, at least pages with ssi in them, they only cached the images.
Anyway, that was the long answer to your short question.

(not related to Elliot) :cartman:
oh, I thought it was an emulator. I have been looking for one, but I guess I'll never find one for now...
It would be a great idea, though :)

I did actually find a couple of links to emulators on google but one was a dead link (it was an .edu link) and the other, the guy that had built it had a message that he no longer was offering it. I believe the link to the emulator was still live and if memory serves me correctly, I did download it but opted to just sign up on AOL anyway out of frustration..
LOL... I'll be back here in about 40 days carping about how I can't seem to get the account cancelled and how they are charging me for something I'm not using, begging for information on how to get them removed from my cc autobilling <g>
