I have Britney Spears site that's on free hosting now 50megs.com and they host domains for free. I would like to go to a payed host now so i can get rid of 50megs baners and put my own up and maybe make some cash. Im looking at hostrocket for 30 a month they offer 15GB Bandwidth since im on a free host i have no idea of how much i need. I get 50,000 page views on a good day and never go below 30,000 a day gotta love high searh engines rankings.

my pages are 135kb in size counting all the pics on the page and the htm page itself i guess thats a heavy page but some are bigger than that depending on the size of the pic someone looks at. I need 200mb in space and i dont use cgi or anything like that can anyone tell me who would be a good host for this type of site i don't know how much gb i need is 15 anough this started out as a hobbie and it just took off its easy to get hits to a spears site though :)

If you get o many visitors and all of the visitors view pictures you need a lot of bandwith.Try using some directories to find a host cause some people are gonna offer you hosting from here.

Whats the website link? ;)

I would suggest you go with tera-byte, coz of your bandwidth usage.

If you make good money out of it get a server.

MSW

Well, lets do the math:

135KB per page, and you say you get 50,000 hits/day = 6.75GB/day * 30 days/mo = 202.5GB/mo

Does anyone come up with other figures, or am I way off base here?

Google

Sounds right and scary you are gonna have to buy alot of bandwith.I hope you make money out of it.

thanks for the reply Google :)

I was looking for a host at hostindex and hostreview some host have unlimted bandwidth but when i read the terms it says they can't host sites like mine :( or that the limt is 6 why do they call it unlimted if there is limit of 6 how much bandwidth do you think i need?

well it's in your best interest to look into optimising your images and site code to reduce that bandwidth consumption, use http://www.netmachanic.com http://www.sitegarage.com for putting your pages through optimisation and stuff - i.e. cutting 20kb off each page would save you 30GB/month in bandwidth !!

of course without a url, i can't comment :)

Google
11-07-2000, 03:17 PM
They call it unlimited because it attracts customer to look at and then sign up.If you look above according to WeinBar you will need 202.5GB/month unless your site visitor doubles which will cost more.Bandwith is nto cheap these days.

BritneyFan
11-07-2000, 03:24 PM
202.5GB/month a are you for real? I dont always get 50,000 page views like on the weekends sat and sunday it falls to 30,000 some i only get 6,000 uniques a day.....where can i find a host then, i know nothing about a server

I could make the images smaller but all mine are high quatily and i like to think thats why i get so many people. looks like i have no choice though :(

Google
11-07-2000, 03:26 PM
Do you make ANY money from the site or its for fun?

etLux
11-07-2000, 03:29 PM
That kind of bandwidth, maybe a dedicated box is a good idea...

MSW
11-07-2000, 03:30 PM
Well, uniques don't matter, unless some of the pages are cached on their local computer.

Let's take the minimum you state, 6000 hits/day
That still = 24.3GB/mo

No matter where you go, it will cost you cash. I hope you have advertiers to offset the cost and bring in extra $$ for ya.

BritneyFan
11-07-2000, 03:30 PM
I make 200 a month from it with a searchbox on everypage. It is just for fun but i love it :)

Google
11-07-2000, 03:36 PM
Add some banner from flycast.com or valueclick and you gonna make good money. If you get 6000unique visits you probably get more then 50,000 thousand impressions.

We should *all* have BritneyFan's traffic problems... lol.

BF, it'd be a real good idea to get familiar with what you need to know to get advertising up. Any way you slice it, this is going to run you some dollars on a rented box.

I'm sure many in here can offer astute guidance.

well if you do get a dedicated server, make sure your setup a mod rewrite to prevent people from hot linking your images to other sites. Otherwise bandwidth could cost you alot.

I i only have her problems i would be so happy.

Using Photoshop or Fireworks or any other graphic application to compress the images can save you huge amount of bandwith.

For example, the pix of 800x600 size range from 600-800K, I compress it in Photoshop with high quality, the pix after that looks much the same but the size goes down to 90-150K. See the big difference that help both you and your customers (for waiting to see the pixs). Of course for fan site, I guess you pix should be around 300x120.

Seriously, I think you exaggerate a bit by seeing the way you talk. I also don't believe you can get 50,000 hits/day in free hosting.

Google
11-07-2000, 03:47 PM
there are many software that compress not only images but other stuff, look for it

Google

hey Nam for how much would you sell uky.com and yuf.com i don't make offers

BritneyFan

LOL Google yahoo did wonders for my site try getting in once and it really helps if your domain has the keyword in it that people search for yes they let free sites in i see a lot of tripod sites in yahoo..........Nam my trafiic comes from doing link exchanges with other high traffic fan sites and some of them link to XXX that and haveing a top 10 refferals list helps alot.

Where can i get a host at i dont even know what a dedicated server is i read about it but didnt understand a word ...... a mod rewrite....no idea of what that is i guess im clueless :(

Google
11-07-2000, 04:16 PM
Thats not something you get from one day of reading you need little expirience since you said that you are new. There was this guy who postes a webiste on webhosting and all sorts of things you need to know if you can only find him...

You should make sure that nobody is linking to your graphics. This could drive up your bandwidth even higher than the calculations.

I will defiantly look into that if I decide to go with paid hosting. I've always been on free web space for over a year now to bad geocities can't host domains they have a small ad that's who I used to be on before buying a domain.

You can host with geocities and forward your domain to that site for free to. Its Called Free Domain Redirection. ;)

If you get 50,000 impressions on a good day then I would look at getting some banners up. If you earn't 1 cent per impression ($10 cpm) of a banner then you would get $500 a day in banner revenue which would help pay for the bandwidth you would use and hopefully leave you some left over.

Your best bet would probably be a managed server with some banner ads up, the banner impressions should more than pay for any bandwidth and admin fees. As an extra bonus if you leased a managed server your site would also be a lot faster in theory as you would be the only site on it.

BritneyFan
11-07-2000, 06:13 PM
good idea kunal

Where can i find such a thing? For free there must be a pop up ad or something then....thanks!

I think, wzr.net does it. you can check out register.com. They have a one time setup charge or something. goto http://www.freewebspace.net and post there. Youll definitaly find what you are looking for.

Glad you said in theory!

It also depends on the backbone. If there are 50000 servers on the same backbone (of course there wouldnt be this many, but just making a point), then you would have major problems.

Looks like a lot of homework needs to be done.

The uky.com is a very nice one, I had so many offers for it (not gonna tell you :) ) because is stand for University of Kentucky (check out http://www.uky.edu). I don't need to sell it as I can use it for redirec traffic (thoundsands of young student) to my future sites :).

You may want to check if you CAN get advertising for your site prior to moving to your own box. I have sites with almost every ad network and they have been shying away from fan sites. If you check out different forums on this topic, it will confirm what I am saying. The usual response is, "We are not accepting any entertainment sites right now" or "We already have 20 Britney sites".

Your best bet would to look at Everyone.net or CPC ad networks. During the summer, Everyone.net was accepting those type of sites but they may be saturated now.

Prior to moving the site, I would email various ad companies first, giving them the URL of your site, that you want to move it, your stats, etc. and ask if they would be interested representing your site. A fan site getting 50,000 is nothing...so impressions are NOT going to be your key to getting in. If they reject you, you saved yourself the expense of getting your own box.

There are very few networks now that are purely CPM, so you also have to take into consideration that if you are getting 30,000 (let's take the low number) impressions per day, that maybe 50% (if that) will be CPM. Then you have to take into consideration that the ad company may not fill your entire inventory. For example, you have 30,000 impressions, the ad company servers 20,000 impressions total, of which 10,000 were CPC, which you do not make a dime unless someone clicks on the ad. Many times, search boxes and affiliate programs pay more than advertising income.

I am not trying to discourage you, I just thought you should know how it REALLY is.

Another thing you could do is join affiliate programs without moving your site, and see what kind of income that produces.

It would be different if you had a site where you could get hosting for $10.00...it could still be for fun. Unless you have deep pockets, if you move your site, it will no longer be for fun, it will be a business.

cj.com or befree.com might be better options for getting some ads going, then you can choose exactly what ads you want

Hi all
Am I the only one here who thinks this is a porn site? Given the high number of hits, the large number of images, and the fact the britneyfan hasn't disclosed the URL? ;)
Just wondering that's all.........

I know these sites are often linked from porn sites, but they are just pictures of her anyhow right? Celeb picture sites must be pretty hot (especially of people like Spears), no?

Ybandy
11-11-2000, 04:59 PM
Is it porn related? Keep in mind that many good hosting companies do not accept such sites. So also ask about that before you go any further. You can use the host search engines on Searchengineguide.com.

Good Luck!

iabloko, care to share what site you have hosted by them? I mean their site looks soooo unprofessional that you'd have to wonder why *anyone* would sign up after seeing it. Makes geocities sites look great (maybe that's what they're going for?).
