I am a beginning webmaster for a non-profit organization; I use FrontPage 2000, and we have lots of pictures on our site (www.kitsap.abate-wa.org). We don't "sell" anything, but do encourage membership in our org. Due to the org's "restructuring" of it's webmaster and online committee, I am looking for a new webhost for our state site (www.abate-wa.org) as well as our 22 chapters.
In these type of forums, I've read about and tried to research many (MANY!) webhosts. I know it can be very risky setting up with a new one, but when the right host is found it can also be a good thing. We are leaving our current host due to 1) they arbitrarily "upgraded" OUR email server software in October 2001 <thereby "nuking" it - they didn't even tell us about it first, PLUS they're not correcting it>, 2) their inability to get us back online in a timely fashion, 3) lack of communication on their part, and 4) not providing the new software instructions.
Our needs are fairly simple as we don't get a lot of traffic (at least I don't think so - our chapter's site had 1300 visits in a year). I thought this would be a good setup for us:
No more than $50 setup fee
Less than $144 per year
Must have at least 25 subdomains (we have 22 chapters) capability and administration
Looking at approx. 100MB disk space
1GB monthly transfer
Unlimited emails (prefer web-based)
Mailing List
Control Panel
FrontPage extensions
- email blockability would be nice
- tech support would be a bonus
- FTP access?
I'm seriously considering Spiderwebgroup.com because they have all of the above and have been in biz for several years. I've just not heard anything about them - good OR bad.
I've also looked at <One>ClickHost, TotalHost, 123EHost, as well as several others that offer what we need... and I'd be willing to keep on looking but there's so many! Problem is, we're on a tight budget, and can't really afford to move the site around if we don't find a good host.
Admittedly, I don't know all the jargon of the trade, don't know what everything means (SQL server? Perl? WAP? SSI? CGI Scripts?), so I'm a little lost when it comes to selecting what the hosts offer. We are willing to pay for good service, and would be simple and "easy-keepers" client-wise.
Based on the above, do any of you have ideas/suggestions/feedback for us? Any input for this "beginner" would be helpful, and very much appreciated.
Thanx,
Mamaha :D
