Quick question. When you lease an Alabanza server does it come with a Verisign certificate or do we have to get that as well. I know the accounts have the ability to set up secured server space but it looks like they might use an old certificate. Thoughts from the Alabanza gang would be appreciated!

"Who would desire peace must be prepared for war."

I can't answer your question, but I appreciate the Latin quote... lol.

Thanks it sometimes irritates some folks. I think I may have found a solution through Equifax for about $80. By the way I have used some of your applets and they work great!

Max:

When you lease a server, you do not get a certificate. That is extra, through either Thawte or Verisign. Alabanza is doing a rollout again tomorrow that will allow an Equifax certificate, so you will be OK with that one.

There is a certificate on there from snakeoil.com. Do not be like some of the other comapanies and try and use this. It is more like a testing cert. Besides, you want the cert in your name. It is worth the extra money because people will want to sign up with your service because you have a secure server. It is pretty funny to see that people will spend a lot of money to lease a server, but will not want to secure it!

If you want to supply a server wide cert, you will need only that certificate, but if you wanted to secure your server, then you will need 2 (One for the server itself and one for server wide security).

I just want to point out to anyone considerint a cert that there's really no reason not to look at Equifax. The price is right (and hopefully will drive down the price of their competitors' products), and it's a reputable company that's been around for years (as one of the major credit bureaus). Apparently Alabanza's newest upgrade will make installing an Equifax certificate easy, but even without it it's been possible, except as your admin certificate. I installed one for a client's domain on our server; all that was required was to install Equifax's root certificate and to make one Apache configuration change so it'd recognize it. Up to now you wouldn't be able to do that for your admin certificate, but could for any hosted domain.

They are partnered with VeriSign, and I have a feeling that they are actually owned by them. Thawte is also VeriSign's partner. :)

As I understand it, the "alliance" between Verisign and Equifax will let Verisign use Equifax's authentication system, where Equifax stores certain information about users on their system (details of, for example, your mortgage payment) and you are prompted to answer questions about that information, questions that only you should know the answer to. It makes sense for Verisign because they don't have such a system (and being one of the "big three" credit bureaus, Equifax already has much of that kind of information) and for Equifax because it will allow the system to work through Verisign and Thawte certificates.
