View Full Version : What CDR/CDRW do you have?
NetXL 12-29-2001, 12:35 AM I'd like to see which are the most popular, I just bought mine the other day, and I _love_ it :)
It's a Sony 24x Write, 10x Re-Write 40x Read with 'Power Burn' technology. Picked it up for $120. Very snappy indeed, I have 70 blank cd's on my desk too. I have some serious backing up to do :D
Fremont Servers 12-29-2001, 01:42 AM I use Yamaha CDRW. :D
JustinK 12-29-2001, 01:42 AM I have a boxed up 24x10x40 PlexWriter in a box behind me. In my IBM Aptiva I have a Smart & Friendly cd-rw drive. I believe it's 6x4x20. Smart & Friendly unfortunately wasn't smart and isn't friendly. It works, but it took some tweaking. It also didn't help that a month after I got the thing as a present, the company went out of business.
Now as for the Plexwriter, it to was a gift and this time I specified a brand since they appear to be staying around a bit longer. Plus I like the whole "Burn Proof" thing. :D
Chicken 12-29-2001, 01:45 AM Yeeeeeup, 4x HP that used to be external until I ripped it out of the case and throw it in the new computer. Yeah, I paid $300 for it.
Phrozen 12-29-2001, 02:16 AM I have a Creative 8x4x32x CDRW that I got last year for $200. Now they're so much cheaper.
SI-Chris 12-29-2001, 02:40 AM TDK 16/10/40x VeloCD with BurnProof. It works *great*, not a single bad CD yet.
I used to have an Iomega ZipCD, but about 1/3 of the CDs it burned had problems.

You spent $100 less and can burn twice as fast as I can. I have no pity for you my friend. ;)
kunal 12-29-2001, 05:32 AM ive been using a hp9100i .. its pretty good... i think i got it for around 150-200$.. dont remember the exact figure..
mdrussell 12-29-2001, 05:45 AM I have an old, slow Yamaha SCSI 4x4x16... I think its time for a new 24x one.
MattF 12-29-2001, 06:17 AM I have Ricoh 16x cdrw. Previously I had a Ricoh 4x. Ricoh make very good drivers imho.
mahinder 12-29-2001, 08:50 AM i have sony 8x/4x/32x cd-writer and it works like a charms, no problem with it since last 6 months. ;)
WildWayz 12-29-2001, 10:40 AM I have a TDK Cyclone 24/10/40 here, a Plextor 24/10/40 at work and my dad has a Sony 16/10/32.
But in the past I have had...
Ricoh 4/4/12
HP 9510i 12/8/24

I still have a 2x Memorex Internal from the days when they just came out. The sucker was $385 at CompUSA back then. Good thing I worked at a corporation that CompUSA gave discounts to (I got it for $285) but if I hadn't, whoooo buddy! It still works too (kinda). I've since upgraded to an 8x Sony (fantastic drive) and now a 20x Yamaha (haven't burned with it yet).
joe52 12-29-2001, 11:20 AM HP 8100i, 4x2x24x, and it can only burn the first 78.5 minutes on a 80 minute disc. I just try to use only 74 minute media so I won't forget about that limitation and burn coasters. Oh, and I paid two or three hundred for my drive several years back. I've been tempted to replace it with something faster, but I burn less than one disc a week so I can't really justify the expense.
Aside from the inability to use an entire 80 minute disc, I have been really happy with my HP. Back when I bought the drive 80 minute media was very difficult to find and cost a lot more than 74 minute media. Now it's getting tough to find decent 74 minute blanks :)

Noldar 12-29-2001, 11:26 AM I had a Yamaha CRW2100E 16/10/40, but it didn't have any kind of Burn-Proof. I ended up with quite a few coasters. I replaced it with a Plextor 24/10/40. It's very nice. Haven't burned a coaster yet.
Richard
Manish 12-29-2001, 11:31 AM Plextor 12/10/32. Yup...the Burn-Proof feature really helps when I'm writing out on 4x CDs...helps me continue work while it writes in background...

James, what are your experiences like with these 2 drives? Which is the better drive?
I've been looking at some 24x drives this afternoon, and am seriously considering getting one...
MarcD 12-29-2001, 11:40 AM i have a phillips dont remember the specs
its like 2 years old
Everyday 12-29-2001, 11:43 AM I just got an HP dvd-writer dvd100i. Its awesome. I can burn cdr cdrw, dvdr dvdrw all from the same drive. the software bundle is the best I ever recieved with any hardware.
so now I can take all the wifes old laser discs and make them into dvd's. I'll get right on that after putting on a new roof, waxing the car, redoing the kitchen floor, building about 20 web sites and oh yeah...running a web hosting business :stickout
bobcares 12-29-2001, 01:04 PM Hey there,
Nobody with a Kodak... :(
I have a Kodak... It is quite cool. Works very well on Linux and BSD.. Haven't tried in on Win....
Have a great day :)

Joe, I think I have the same one, but the specs seem a bit off. I do recall that the box said one thing and the numbers on the drive said another (meaning 4x4x24 and 4x6x48 or something like that), which never made much sense to me. I think it is an 8100i though, might be some variation of that, but close. Interesting about the 80 minute limitation, didn't know that but am guessing it applies to mine as well.

Matt, I think I have the same grand plans. Tried to convince the wife we needed one to burn the home movies and old video tapes I have. I've got about 600 of those little projects to do so it probably wouldn't happen, heh. Good excuse to buy something though.
Everyday 12-29-2001, 01:53 PM Actually I also got it for the increased back up capability as well as being able to create movie clips for customers and the like.
I agree though it'll probably take me years to copy them. I'm going to wait for the price of the media to come down first though!!! :eek2:
Bluetin 12-29-2001, 02:10 PM I use Philips. It's is good as long as I use 8x. It hangs
most of the time, if I use 16x.:)

HP has a pretty good page on identifying the model of one of their burners:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40231.html
Once you know that, there is another page to find out if your drive supports 80 minute media (most do):
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpcd-write9675&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpg40817

I've got a Plextor 12/10/32. Paid close to $240 last summer. Awesome cdrw, never had a problem. Plextor, of course, is the best brand.
Chicken 12-29-2001, 07:54 PM If I pull the drive, I could tell, though I saw it was an 8200 Series model, and it says it can write the 80 minute ones. Good links, but I'm not going to pull it to find the exact model, which would create yet another project (I'm really good at taking things out, but far worse at actually putting them back, putting tools away, etc.).
bitserve 12-29-2001, 09:35 PM My brother just bought this. If you buy before 12/31/2001 you can get a $30 rebate from plextor ($154.00-$30.00=$124.00). It is one of the few derives that supports (can copy) SafeDisk 2 CDs.

If you want the generic one for cheaper, you can get the same drive by Lite On for $82.00.

I have a slightly older Plextor. I think plextor is good, because it is supported by almost all of the burning software.
HTML-Guru 12-29-2001, 10:09 PM I have a Pacific Digital 4x4x8 USB cd burner.....no problems yet :D

one of the first ones to get a burner way back like 3 years ago or so... the sucker still burns like a charm too, although I should be getting a new one pretty darn soon

Chicken, stop feeling sorry for yourself. The burner I had before this was an external SCSI 2x write 4x read. It was $800.

JustinK 12-30-2001, 03:31 PM I thought he was talking about softwarerevue
You can probably find some good cd-rw info at cnet and techtv.com.
Long Live TECHTV!!!!
Mike the newbie 12-30-2001, 06:12 PM I just bought my second Plextor, this one a 24/10/40, my older one is 12/10/32, both EIDE.
I like the Plextor drives because they are designed for professsional use, i.e., 8 hour a day, every day.
Nice rugged drives.

at first i was skeptical cause i never heard of LiteOns and since I got them for around $90 or somewhere around there (which *was* cheap back in those days)... but now, I'm happy I got the LiteOn, i haven't had any trouble using it
before that, i had a 4x2x32 Acer CDRW - whooo... remember those good ol' days of burning a 650mb CDR in 25minutes at the fastest? :D

How'd you get the Sony working with Nero? Nero doesn't detect mine :( I need to use CD Mate.
