View Full Version : ******* DOWN!?!?!

Hi Guys, I started with ******* for 3 months now, over the past month I have had lots of problems with them, I paid for 200GB of Bandwidth but since Dec, my site was slow as a snail, their dedicated server setup was also in a mess, the most simpliest person would know that RPM packages is one of the key features of Redhat and they set up the server for me without that in mind. Now I have to recompile all the updates because they didn't use RPM.

Right now the site is down, can someone bring me out of this hell?

I hope someone from ******* is READING THIS.

I emailed them for the past 1 week to resolve this issue NO REPLIES!

I called about an hour ago, and Ed said they were on the phone with Verio trying to figure out what the deal was.

They have had some bandwidth problems lately, but it seems to have gotten better. They said a few servers on their network were sucking HUGE amounts of bandwidth during the day.
They are in the process of building a new datacenter to aleviate the congestion problem.

But yes, this downtime is a pain. Always is.

Got me dead in the water right now 10:03 eastern time. But the funny thing is I got about 2 internet alerts today that were about quest and AIH/A-Bone.net services being down or high packet loss. could it be we are seeing an new type of attack on routers.

I'll post a message when they are up again.

Even so, they did not bother to reply my email, tell me why they didn't use RPMs which will help us users a lot :(

I am in the mist of a festive promotion and my site had to go down, its a pain

Funny thing was Verio is not down.

Apparently the routing stops at Verio, either Verio cut them off or one of the Verio router is gone

They are still down :(

Unless ******* gets their act together and tell me what's going on and why they haven't been replying my email. I think I am moving out of *******, to think I recommended so many of my friends to them....

Maybe I am not important...

most likely they can't answer you because their own servers are down ( seems like the most probable ) does anybody know there AIM id.

I would think that they have an AOL account for emergency back up

Mike, they have not replied me for more than a week. :( even before the whole network went down.

For the past week, I have emailed ed@*******.com, jim@*******.com and even support@*******.com ten times over to resolve the bandwisth and server issues due to poor server setup. Did I get a reply ZERO! BIG ONE!

All these before the whole pool goes down.

Sigh....

ADEhost can you PM me jimmys email address too,
I have a server out there and cannot access the same too,

I also had a minor outage 2 days ago , and a couple of times Ed told me that it could have been my local isp problem , Whereas i can access my servers elsewhere at catalog, rackspace .

Cant ping to them from my catalog server too , so this time i can say it is a network problem,

If they have bandwidth issues i think they should cap the bandwith of servers if they cannot handle more rather than allowing the network to go down,

Ed, Jim , do something please

It serves no purpose emailing them especially now even ******* server is down......

someone in the US please speak to them ,
how much time it would take for the network to come up.

This is bad,

Mark up www.bestofhumor.com as being down also due to *******. I think this goes to speak about hosts saying they have reduant lines with multiple providers ( not sure they ever did but just in general) they earlier had a problem with power outage and didn't know why there power backups did not pick up the outage.

Bandwith has been super slow and email even worse when trying to download almost like a 28.8 modem. I am not one to bash, but I also might start looking someplace else.

Can't have downtime and can't have slow email coming down when you run 12 ezines.

It seems like its more of a problem with their backbone (VERIO). We should give them some more time to resolve this. Lets hope it turns out well, we can only hope. :)

bengyeow

For starters, they really wow me the past month, more than when they initially started... if you know what that means

Like what I said earlier, the routing stops at Verio, I got a feelings its more of Verio pulling the plug on them rather than a Verio problem, none of Verio's customers is affected as far as I know...

Can we confirm this with them , If verio has actually cut them off like what bengyeow says, that is worst and we dont know when they would start, If its a network outage from verios side i am sure it would have been sorted out by now.

I honestly think that verio would be trying their best in this situation. Who knows the situation may be deeper than we all imagined?

Seriously, if all of *******'s bandwidth is on one router, then I am really appalled.

Nevertheless, I expect an explanation on the outrage as well as on the service level of the stuff, as well as why the server wasn't setup using RPMs, making it so difficult for me to update my PHP, mySQL, Apache and Plesk

ADEhost

I did a trace route yesterday and did one during the outage and again after the outage

funny thing is that the va - to seattle link has about 7 hops in it

real wierd

>As well as why the server wasn't setup using RPMs, making it so difficult for me to update my PHP, mySQL, Apache and Plesk

Hmm... If you're not familiar with Linux then you really shouldn't be running you're own server. If RPMs are as far as you go then I hate to think what you're going to do when you have to recompile the kernel, install a new deamon, fix a security problem or anything slightly beyond a Linux newbie. I hope for your own sake as much anyone else that you're just running a personal site and not intending to host other individuals' websites.

Also, most people prefer to compile their applications from source so they can tune the compilation configuration more, nothing better than an optimized httpd. Maybe they presumed you actually knew what you were doing? Maybe they presumed that if you really wanted to go the RPM route, you'd remove the deamons already installed and setup the RPMs yourself, is it really that hard???

With regards to the network outage I can understand you're frustration and hope it is resolved soon, but in regards to your server issue you'll find its a pretty standard setup, hire a sysadmin or become a reseller if you can't hack it.

:) me blames the control panel revolution.

The network outage was resolved hours ago. He's just frustrated atm cuz there was no reply from ******* / support.

The introduction of RPM is to ensure that upgrades of individual product do not interfere with others, recompilation of kernels and all these are no issues. Anyway, I would rather spend more time doing up my site than to recompile all the stuff.

Here's *******'s generic reply.

Dear ******* Customer,
Thank you for contacting *******.
We indeed experience several hours of network downtime yesterday 12/28/2001 due to the outage from our Main Seattle Westin Routing hub. Verio network was down yesterday due to a hardware routing failure. ******* immediately noticed the downtime and worked closely with Verio in order to resolve the issues.
A routing equipment had to be replaced and the outage was restored in several hours. The network is now restored to its normal condition.
We apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you. Please let us know if there are any issues with your current dedicated / virtual hosting due to the downtime.
Have a Happy New Year !
Sincerely,
******* Technical Team

Well, I dun like the reply. 5 hours of down time, they dun even dare to put it in the email.

Hi Guys, some updates, Jim finally replied and assure me that the service level will be back to what it is, I accepted his explanation and decided to give ******* another chance.

Meanwhile they are building another facility to aid their expansion, my server will be moved there, I hope it will turn out to be good.

Cheers,
Beng Yeow

We've known about their new NOC plans since november. Its a good move, specially if it'll help speed up the network. We'll have to wait until mid-january... thats when the noc is supposed to be online :)
