Blender is possibly one of the best programs I've seen out there.

If you're getting this for free, I don't want to be there when the cops show up!!!

well discreet has a 30 day uncrippled trial for 3d max studio.
So no need for the cops to get involved yet :D

they have the XSI XP and XSI 3.5 for halflife I think both for free.

ALso you can find a free Amapi 3D here:

Zmodeller is good. Don't get version 2 though because its only a preview version with loads of features missing. 1.07 is good though.

Wings3D. I love this program. Very good modelling tool.

Calligari give away an older version of their TrueSpace software. It's pretty good.

Enjoy!

3D Studio Max is the spawn of satan. I mean only working on windows? psssh. Anyone serious (pixar etc.) works on *nix machines for 3D work (Mac OS X in pixar's case, linux for Dreamworks SKG). The only reason it's popular is because it had easy to crack copyright protection, so all the 'l33t gr4ph1X 4rt15tS' used it.

Blender is great, and for the price, can't be beated.

If you're looking to spend a little bit of money, but not hugs amounts, check out Cinema 4D. It's very affordable.

The true king is maya though.

Yep. I honestly prefer a Mac when designing graphics or websites. Maya is a great piece of software, though very pricey (4899£ Last time I checked).

Yeah that's why when I was at Siggraph last year, the AGUA (Maya) party sucked! They were cheap on the free drinks (only 2). Only good thing I got out if after falling asleep through the 20 million hair plugins they were working on, I won an ATI graphics card from ATI.

The Discreet was the best, in a nice hotel, and all the drinks you can drink ;) Of course, they had millions of mini Evian waters too so after 8 or so Coronas, my roommate at the time jacked about a dozen or so for the hotel room! Water isn't cheap. Not to mention that discreet had a lot of goodies, shirt, cool bag, pins, Expose artwork on postcards, Intel had goodies and lots of free food :)

Back to the subject of the thread, sorry for being a bit off topic. I would try Rhinio 3d, I believe it is still free? If not, it is definitely worth going through the trial versions or even purchasing a student copy. Zbrush is fun to use but until the new version comes out, I don't think I will purchase it until then. I would rather use Softimage over Maya. There is Hash Animation master, which isn't too bad. I've seen a lot of nice things from that program.

There is also Form-Z (not free though). If you look in a lot of the UK magazines, some offer free educational versions (They had cinema 4d bundled in a cd not too long back). I still haven't tried it though. I'm a 3ds Max user myself :) I especially like how Mental Ray is now included.

Good luck! Remember, it's what works best for you!

Rhino isn't free, but it's not that expensive and it's very powerful, except it doesn't have a very good rendering engine AFAIK.

The thread starter wanted something to learn on. Rhino 3d has their evalutation copy but after so many times, you cannot save.
http://download.mcneel.com/rhino/3.0/eval/

Other than that, it has good potential. But has the ability to integrate with other programs as far as exporting to those formats I believe.

Try gmax offered by Discreet as well. It's not as powerful as 3ds max, but then again it's free.

gmax is geared towards games and I believe they've developed a lot of nice add ons for it as far as pre built models and what not? I think I got the e-mail about that. Yes, it's free but I tried it out, and it's very limited compared to 3ds Max yet still a good learning tool.

Yup it doesn't really have the power of Maya, 3ds max, but like you said, it's a good learning tool : )
