View Full Version : A funny hostingtalk.com story
talkwebhosts 07-27-2004, 12:41 PM Out of curiosity I was wondering how much the hostingtalk.com domain would cost and I decided to email the owner. I expected the price to be anywhere from $5,000 on up to $10,000. It turns out that the owner of the site feels his domain is worth alot more.
Can you guess what he quoted me? It was enough to laugh for a good while.
AdeptHosts 07-27-2004, 12:48 PM $2,000,000?

With WHT selling for some 6 figures (with the site/forum, of course), I honestly don't think asking a fraction of that ridiculous. Esp. if the owner does NOT actively seek to sell the domain, quoting a higher price will fend off unsolicited offers.
EDIT: Moreover, it can be argued that hostingtalk.com is a *better* domain than webhostingtalk.com.
Toeki 07-27-2004, 12:52 PM My guess is about 1M
AdeptHosts 07-27-2004, 12:57 PM 2,000,000
or
200,000
nameslave 07-27-2004, 01:06 PM AND George owns ht.com as well, so ... :D
Ramprage 07-27-2004, 01:10 PM 700 members with 700 posts worth 2,000,000 or 200,000????
HAHAHA
More like $2000 at the most.
frozen 07-27-2004, 01:12 PM Just me but you are giving this domain way too much worth. Inet didn't pay for webhostingtalk.com because it was a good domain, they bought it because of the community behind it. If webhostingtalk had these stats like the one mentioned above:
Our members have made a total of 772 posts
We have 714 registered members
The newest member is Cheeseman
Most users ever online was 230 on Nov 13 2003, 10:06 PM
I don't think INet would have even been slightly interested.

He said it was a ridiculous price.
Bashar 07-27-2004, 01:31 PM i wouldn't pay any near 4 fitures for that forum :P
axelz 07-27-2004, 01:39 PM Are we talking Canadian dollars here? ;)
UH-Matt 07-27-2004, 01:46 PM The content isnt worth all that much. If the figure was too high you could use the funds, instead, to start fresh and then promote a new forum to gain just as many posts in a very short space of time.
However..
hostingtalk.com and ht.com as domains are worth something, thats for sure ;)
Bashar 07-27-2004, 02:16 PM oh yeah! didn't notice that :)
he owns them both
ht.com alone worth 20 - 50K in reseller market and can go as high as 6 figures easily.
GeorgeK 07-27-2004, 02:23 PM I own the aforementioned hostingtalk.com. I always find it funny when people come and expect to get domains for free.
These are the same people who come to me saying they're poor college students starting a music club, and want to buy my Jukebox.com for $100. :)
If I have a business plan for a domain, and the domain is essential to executing that plan (because it goes perfectly with my HT.com), should I give it away for free?
dmaven 07-27-2004, 02:24 PM I agree with bashars estimates. I think the ht.com name is probably what is worth the most.
talkwebhosts 07-27-2004, 02:56 PM He quoted me $200,000 for the domain! That means immolo wins! As far as it being worth that, I highly doubt that. Maybe ht.com but not hostingtalk.com I could register hstngtalk.com and develop a community based upon that domain and make a profit each month instead of going $200,000 into debt!
GeorgeK 07-27-2004, 03:31 PM If one made an extra $100/day, due to a great domain name, that pays for itself in a few years.
A lot of folks invest their money in bad domains, and then leak traffic to better ones.

Very true. ;)
sbdquinten 07-29-2004, 09:39 AM Still it comes down to what most people say...
A domain is worth what the future owner want to pay for it... it's his view on the domain's future, right?
but stories like these are good... to keep things relative... :)

Very much like his mom is a woman and the sun rises in the east ... :D
sbdquinten 07-29-2004, 10:01 AM yeah yeah yeah...
a rose is a rose is a rose [hemingway]
some things are just logical. (i guess)
Acroplex 07-29-2004, 02:16 PM Ridiculing one's asking price won't get you the domain a penny cheaper. Instead, get educated on the market value of domains with broad marketshare.
BaileyS 07-30-2004, 02:56 AM whoa! $200,000 for a domain????
voltion 07-30-2004, 09:10 AM $100 Filling space
Bashar 07-30-2004, 09:35 AM creditcards.com just been sold for $2,750,000 :D

kohashi 07-31-2004, 01:27 PM Not everything is for sale, some people actually develop domains and unless you offer a 'ridiculous' price they won't give it up. I know I certainly won't give up some of my domains that I want to develop. I also agree that making fun of the asking price, while amusing (on occassion), won't get you anywhere.
