View Full Version : Question about emails!
Tonnage 11-06-2000, 10:19 PM Ok,
My hosting company just moved to Ultraspeed, aka VDI. WELL they blow!. on
all my emails, and client emails they have my login.
so if the login for that account "admin" the login for the email for a
client who is john doe, would be adminjohnd with the email
johnd@mydomain.com.
That is crap. I refuse to hand out my log in like that.
So, Am I just being stupid, or is this a real problem?
And do we konw of a single good reseller hosting company? I just flat dont
care much anymore. Help!
Thanks,
~Ryan

I'm not sure I see what the problem is..
In most hosts your login is your email (beeing john@domain.com login is "john") (actually, all ISP's (not hosts) that I know work like that)
So, don't worry about this, people still need your password to access your login, becide, john@somain.com login is not necessarly domainjohn, the server can set it up sometimes as domajohn or doamijohn .. etc.
Just curious, how was the login setup in the previuous host ?
Martie 11-06-2000, 11:54 PM I think Mike at http://www.webauthorities.com
has a pretty good reseller program, and I am sure there are more, check some threads.
I think Mike also offers the bulk plans too?
Good Luck
sorry hostcaters does not offer a reseller plan at the moment.
Tonnage 11-07-2000, 12:10 AM Yeah that would have made sense.
The problem is this.
Lets say i have a domain, and the login for the admin account is admin. This is not an email account, just the admin so i can FTP/Telnet whatever.
Well, now i have to set up emails for my clients the people whose site it is
His name is John Doe and he wants the email johnd@mydomain.com
His email is that. But his login is adminjohnd@mydomain.com
So they just gave away my login. I use totally random logins and passwords, for security, but now i cant do that. Because i have to give it out to my clients.
Most hosts do it the way you described, well, all that i had before. I just think this is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.
I called and asked about it, and they told me that its because more than one person on that machine could have the login of johnd. So its to make sure the correct person gets into the right account. Although, just by setting the correct mail server, that would do it. Thus by setting the correct mail server, you set the correct Ip, and therfore you can see the Correct MX record, and get into the right account without any problems.
I personally think they are just flat stpuid, and have no clue or business being a host.
Félix C.Courtemanche 11-07-2000, 12:19 AM I beleive that are doing that because they just switched from unique pop3 users to shared pop3 users.
You can hack the pop3 program to allow multiple instances of the same username and split it on a virtual domain basis. However, this is definately not the default setup, and I assume that they switched from the first to the second.
Basically, that mean that they did that to prevent any duplicated username to create problems. It is definately annoying and something that you don't want, but it is not caused because they are loosy or stupid. It's because they changed server and changed server type.
CRego3D 11-07-2000, 12:55 AM We are changing to a VDI server .. so far nobody complained about the email.. but I'll wait and see
Tonnage 11-07-2000, 02:45 AM What are the pros and cons of doing this.
I think security would be a huge issue.
I am Solaris Certified, but am treading water so to speak until i can afford to buy the boxes i need, Sparc machines are costly.
Is there any advantage of doing this?
DanielP 11-07-2000, 10:07 AM Sir,
You should redirect any and all email complaints over the email setup to noc@vdi.net . We are only able to control so much of a system but when our control panel etc is leased from them we have no control over the ways emails are setup or activated. Thus they are in the format of either login<pop> or domain<pop>. It isn't a security issue if you have a secure password. Getting someones login information is quite easy as I'm sure you know but getting access to their account and their password is a whole different matter.
If I could change the way the email worked for that customer I would, however I do not have imediate control over the control panel thus I cannot change the way it works.
So as I said earlier, you can direct your complaints regarding the email to noc@vdi.net
Sincerely~
