So DNS is the bit on the whois like....

n1.website.com
n2.website.com

Correct?

Well how do I get my own DNS? Check that the web host has this feature? Or is it the domain host?

At the moment mine says..

Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.SSLCATACOMBNETWORKS.ORG
NS2.SSLCATACOMBNETWORKS.ORG

Thanks.

The web host does.
If you buy reseller account then your host will provide you 2 IP address that you could use for your domain.
Remember that you must register its first in your domain host.

ok..

So if I want my own DNS, I have to check that the host provides 2 or more dedicated IP's?

What do you mean register it with my domain host? When I put in the name servers in the admin section?

Here is how it is:

when you buy a domain you either park/forward it or point it to to 2 dns servers. the dns servers are at your web hosting, the actual servers. yes, you should ask if you can have your own domain and they provide you with nameservers.

u can register ns1.website.com and ns2.website.com to the same IPs of
NS1.SSLCATACOMBNETWORKS.ORG
NS2.SSLCATACOMBNETWORKS.ORG

and then switch ur domain to ns1/ns2.website.com and it should work just fine :)

u might wantto ask ur hosting company for help too, some companies does it for free and some might charge.

they are on 2 different servers ns1.sslcatacombnetworks.org and ns2.catacombnetworks.org

so ns1.website.com and ns2.website.com will be also different :)

yeah like zoneedit's http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/network.html

but u never know 2 solid servers in 2 different places can take care of many domains

some TLDs like .org or others runs over 2 nameservers only on ultradns.net :D

Not to come to UltraDNS's aid but they do use IP anycast so there is actually much more than two name servers.

The same IP in Europe and you will get a name server is Europe.
The same IP in Asia will get you another name server in Asia.
etc. etc..

Works pretty well to distribute a DOS attack. If the attack is coming out of China then only the name server in China will get hit.

oh i see, any more information aobut anycast and how does it spread traffic based on location?

Thanks :)

Well there are tons of things online regarding it but most of it is mumble jumble.
The best rundown that I have seen on it can be found at http://www.net.cmu.edu/pres/anycast/Deploying%20IP%20Anycast.ppt.

Not extremely difficult to set up, but it takes some decent hardware to make it work properly. We have it running on test systems right now but not in production yet. Hopefully soon.

Yeah, without IP anycast the Ultra DNS pricing would just be ridiculous for only two name servers. :stickout:
