View Full Version : Alright, tell me whether I should scrap it or not.

It would have had OverLIB (i.e. DHTML pop-ups - Greg will know exactly what I'm talking about) running, with rollovers running at the top.
However, I woke up yesterday morning and I suddenly hated the design today. Something just tells me I shouldn't bother with it.
Does it look unprofessional? Crap? Rip it to shreds and confirm or deny my gut feeling please...
Thanks in advance.
BlueZebra 11-06-2000, 08:01 PM I honestly think you should go with your gut feeling, it's cool but not THAT cool, not BC cool if you know what I mean.
Sleep on it for a while, you can come up with something way cool.
BTW, check your email I sent you something that's really important

etLux 11-06-2000, 08:05 PM I think maybe the key problem here is just too darned many colors going at once.
Many designers stick to the "Four Color Rule" -- which basically says, don't use more than four colors in a design.
That's perhaps a bit too constraining for many practical designs; but in my own work, I do find it a good port from which to embark.
Bogdan 11-06-2000, 08:37 PM BC, whats your ICQ#?
Chicken 11-06-2000, 08:42 PM Well it certainly is *interesting*, heh. Very colorful. Although there is that 4 color rule, it doesn't apply to things meant to be overly colorful such as rainbow patterns. Very different. Hmmm.
Yeah, that's what I thought. Originally I decided to break to break the old 2-3 colour rule simply to see what effects it would have. I originally liked it, but now I'm getting to the point where the old 'mr. usability and informational architecture' in me is just saying "It's ****ed".
Thanks everyone - definitely will scrap it and start afresh...
akashik 11-07-2000, 02:31 AM Go with the guts old friend. If for no other reason than it's going to bug you tomorrow, and then keep bugging you for the rest of the page's natural life. I've built a few pages in my time, and the one's I've had that feeling with and have left 'as is' have driven me stark raving mad. Best to pull the chain and wave it goodbye as it goes round and round and down the pipe. :)
I think I know where you're going with the design. I think it might be a little too 'busy' though With all the blocks, circles and fonts it's too hard to focus on a theme (though I dig the kid in the highchair pic *lol*)
What graphics system are you using? You're getting a little too 'jaggy'. Anti-aliasing doesn't add to the page load *too* much if it's done cleanly.
Oh yeah 'overlib' is a serious problem of mine. I'm thinking of a 12 step for that too (along with the domain addiction). It's a great little tool used sparingly, but adds a ton of html to a page. (ie. a comaprison of plans page I'm building now weighs in at over 50k with tables and overlib stuff!!! and that's just the html alone! *shudder*).

What the URL stands for LOL!!:)
etLux 11-07-2000, 08:26 AM IMHO, if you can't tolerate looking at your own design after a few days of working with it, then it's probably best to scrap it and start over.
If it's any consolation, at least for me, scrapping designs is a pretty regular process... lol.

Yes. Ever sat there at 4am in the morning thinking "My god this sucks!", after working away for 8hrs straight or so?
One of the greatest abilities of a webdesigner is to be able to look at something and realise it should never see the light of day, smother it with a pillow and bury it in the walls. :)

etLux 11-07-2000, 10:38 AM AMEN!
Well, I'll say this much. That design was in the works for the last few weeks while I've been tangling with University exams (and I have another one today), and I thought it would be interesting to see the results. I actually liked it right up until Monday morning, when I woke up, took another look and immediately deleted the original prototype.
Ah well, back to blue minimalist funky stuff for me :D

Goodness yes (just about every site I've ever done). After you get done with all the graphics and piece the whole thing together, you suddenly realize how horrid the whole heap is.
