A Cobalt RaQ is pretty much a normal piece of server hardware made by Sun. What sits on the hard disk/s is what makes a RaQ, a RaQ. They come with a fairly easy to use web based control panel, that lets you easily perform every day administration tasks such as adding an email addres or ftp account, sub-domain etc. The panel goes even further than that too, you have 2 levels, the system admin, and a site admin. The system admin has the ability to change actual server settings, and to add 'sites.' A site being a hosting account, where you set their limits on the account features. The site admin can log into their account and add email addresses/ftp accounts/subdomains etc until they have reached the limits the admin has set. Lots of people like to use them because they are a 'hassle free' piece of equipment, that almost any slightly computer literate person could operate. This is sometimes a problem though. Some people start their own hosting company with these, without knowing the slightest bit about admin'ing a server, and run into problems later if there is a need to manually fix a service on the server. The operating system is from what I know, a slightly modified version of RedHat Linux.

Oh.. RaQ's also look kinda neat on the outside. Blue, and see-through :)

hey thanks andy!

is RaQ an acronym for anything? and what about some of the security issues for these control panels? Are there any control panels for the standard flavours of linux?

one more thing.. .do these control panels have an infinite depth? like i could set up a reseller who sets up a reseller who sets up a reseller.. and we'd all get the same interface and ability to add domains, set quotas, enable pop mail, etc.,?

Plesk absolutely doesn't have infinite depth. I has three levels, end user, reseller and serveradmin

My mistake. It's late :D

I've corrected my post.
Thanks,

Well,m i have to admit a control panel with some more depth then three levels so resellers can also setup resellers etc would be nice. Haven't found one though.

Plesk is a very nice cp, using it for some time now, only disadvantage is that you can't set a subdomain to a subdirectory, at least not through the control panel. A subdomain acts as a new domain, also a great option if you sell accounts with a subdomain under your own domain(so clients don't need to register a domain). But a choice would be nice.
