I am most likely going to go with a cobalt raq to host my dedicated site. However, I am willing to look at using one of the Duron boxes at rackshack with ensim. However, I figure I'd need a good book on linux. The only one's I can find seem to deal with linux on a desktop, etc. Are there any books out there on linux for newbies who specifically want to use it to set up a dedicated server. Or how about any book out there specifically on getting started on a dedicated server.

I've got some self-taught programming experience in databases, php, mysql, html etc, but nothing else.

Thanks

Linux Unleashed
Deals with many web hosting related issues, named, perl, etc.
Big thick book, read it cover to cover (skipping the crap about Xwindows) and you should be on your way.

Oreilly books are really good but before you buy a book you should know what do you really want to know about. You should buy at least couple of books. One about shell you
are using (typical shell for linux is bash) and one about webserver you are using, propably about Apache (http://www.apache.org) web server.

Here are three books that I would suggest.
1) Linux Bible,
2) Linux Unleashed
3) Linux Network Servers.

Another suggestion would be to buy a Linux CD and make your primary OS at home Linux... This would really help.

Have a great day :)

And break all your Microsoft CD's in half, this is what I refer to as the "Swim or Drown Linux Learning Method" :D

Any self-respecting Linux sysadmin will refer to LinuxDoc every week or so at the very least. You'll also find some excellent free e-books on running, optimising and securing your box.

Yes, definitely. I also find myself at www.devshed.com quite a lot as well as www.perldoc.com.

From a security side, "Hacking Linux Exposed" is a good book.

I think that the manual that comes with RedHat is pretty good.
