View Full Version : Is there a datacenter that guarantees 100% uptime?

Does anyone know of one?
Is it possible?

I would think that most hosts will guarantee 100% uptime. On the very rare occasion that a router would fail, etc, then there would be some sort of compensation clause, usually a per day credit for any day/portion there is an outage.

Isn't 100% guaranteed uptime equal to unlimited bandwidth?

Meaning if you see something like that advertised, you should definatly read the fine print in the tos to see what kind of downtime does not fall under this guarantee?

Yes and no, if a webhost offers 100% uptime, it might be alright, as long as you see a clause in their TOS for if something happens, DOS attacks, natrual disasters, etc. If they don't, then you should run......

Inflow & Savvis are a couple of them. Yes, they are out there.

Kind of mixed replies.

I originally asked because someone I know asked me if I'd be interested in getting some servers with him in a datacenter [unnamed by me] that offerred a 100% uptime guarantee.

I decided to post the question here; as I had feelings like Pilgrim.
How could you go with someone that offered something they knew they couldn't delver? If you have to read through their TOS or SLA to find that they give you a free month or whatever if they should ever be down, I would deem that deceptive.

Unless, of course, they had on their front page that "We guarantee 100% uptime as long as nothing breaks. And if something does break, we'll compensate you for it."

I'm just wondering if I'm over-reacting to the 100% uptime guarantee.

Well *any* uptime guarantee doesn't really pertain to server/network uptime, it is a monetary guarantee, that's the whole idea behind it.

Same thing goes for most (if not all) guarantees. They don't guarantee that the product won't break, but they will replace it/refund your money if it does. More or less implied.

100% uptime is impossible. Utopia....Thats an ideal network...

It is possible, you of course can't always get it, but from time to time, you can get 100% uptime.. My Dailup ISP has given me 100% uptime on a number of occasions, I would stay connected for 31+ days without a disconnect.....

And then there is sometimes when it will be down for an hour.... But I got a free month because it was down for that hour....

No one will have a guaranteed - 100% uptime. They may offer it in SLA's, but it is impossible to promise it. If you think it isn't I will be willing to challange it in writing. I will bring you my business which transfers millions of dollars (made up of course) an hour online (ex - ebay), and you will agree to cover ALL lost cost if your network goes down. Any takers??? 100% uptime -100% of the time is impossible. If you belive it, you do not understand the Interenet.

Inflow, Sprint, Savvis, that have '100% uptime guarantees' are nothing more then SLA's. Big difference. They say we strive to have 100% uptime, BUT if we don't we compensate. Even they can not promise their network would never falter.

A 100% uptime guarantee doesn't really guarantee the uptime itself, rather that you will get some sort monetary payment if uptime dips below that (I think Chicken said that in an earlier post). For example if it goes down for .1%, you might get a once-off payment, or a month free.

Well the question is can they offer it,, and that is YES they can do anything they like.

Next question is can they meet it %100 of the time,, NO Not Possible at all.

Yes, some servers are like that... though all do SOMETIMES go down. My last host never had a bad day in the half year I stuck with them. One day, I remember that for about an hour it was down, but that's all.
