View Full Version : a bit of a puzzle

I'm not leaving my current host, but researching a possible branch out that isn't possible under their hosting. Reliability is the most important factor.

With the closing of various free hosts, and geocities getting more obnoxious by the day, I am considering offering a bit of a service back to the bit of cyberspace I like to play in. Similar to some of the 'clan' or other roleplaying type societies is the best description.

Anyway, these little clubs play by email usually, so mailing lists are key and email is nice, but not as essential as the lists. The TOS/Acceptable use needs to include the ability to offer small portions of webspace to individual clubs, who would be allowed to donate but not required to pay monthly fee (I don't have the time nor headache meds for doing resell, especially since many of these groups are variable in their leadership and often include young folk (teens) who can't pay).

In monitoring my own similar site for some time in paid hosting, I have one of the highest traffic sites of them all and bandwidth isn't outrageous. I do understand the worry of server strain, so figure this is a good place to ask.

Minimum 200 MB space.
PHP4/MySQL/Perl5
Minimum 10 mailing lists
Subdomains heavily preferred, with FTP for each.
Bandwidth about 20GB to be safe.

Cost $15-25 range per month. It's experimental, so I don't want to sink a lot of money into the project if I decide it is viable. If worst comes to worse, I'll have a nice site/domain for personal use if the project doesn't fly, I suppose.

Any recommendations? I know, post in the other section too ;-) I also wanted input and/or advice on whether or not I'd lost my marbles in considering being what a friend laughingly dubbed my 'website welfare" project.

Oh - and just to save time and typing fingers - no Aletia hosting. Been there, done that, got away with sanity intact.

Please excuse my English. What does this mean?

He means he's been with Aletia before, and wishes other suggestions.
