Which do you like? Why?

My basic understanding is Nagios is the defacto standard, however somewhat complicated get configured.

Midas has compatbility with all Nagios plugins (?) and is much easier to get setup.

Is Midas's feature set on par with Nagios? It seems Midas is well respected and if it is much easier to work with...

What's your opinion?

Thanks!

I use both in conjuction with each other. Both are great pieces of softwares that allow a great amount of flexibility for monitoring purposes.

What are the particular areas of strength / weakness for each as you see it?

Nagios Advantage over MIDAS:

Nagios does not need every server that is to be monitored to have a client process running on it. Nagios has a great redundancy package. It is very flexible to use and configure.

Disadvantages of Nagios:

It is defintely not an easy software package to configure. However it becomes very easy to install once you have done it alot of times. Like i have.

Advantages of Midas over Nagios:

Midas is alot more accurate in its dealings with the monitored servers because it accesses all its information by a local process, then that information is distributed to the main server. Midas also has a good redundancy package built within it.

Disadvantages of MIDAS:

Like stated before you must have a local process running the client on each monitored server.

However both are great packages to use.

Maybe it's just time for a NAGIOS hosting plan :-).

I work for the State of Ohio and we use Nagios to monitor our network. Currently 1250 devices we have it monitoring. It is very easy to manage once it is configured.

Man, you read my mind!
I have been thinking about this for a couple of months,
just looking for a reliable Linux VPS to host it into.

BTW, If someone does it before I would happily pay for it.

I found this monitoring sw made in .NET
http://www.exclamationsoft.com/webwatchbot/why_buy.asp
it is not cheap, but looks very good.

I wonder if there is any cheaper competor product in PHP or the same ASP/MS platform
