Hi everyone..
I would like you to pass your thoughts on why the UK servers are far more expensive than the US servers, or they do include far less bandwidth with equal / or even high price..
I have been to UK many times and I know that it is one of the most expensive countries in the world, but telecommunications is something which looks Global and UK is the landing point of Fiber loops to the Europe. It is a little bit weird that the prices are so high in a country which is a center of Global communications. Is this the result of high taxes in the UK, or what? I think the bandwidth prices are high in the UK.

Generally space in London (where most of the connectivity is available) is expensive, the cost of living is expensive and virtually everything else is expensive, we have high tax and combined with companies taking liberties with us equates to high prices. We take the burden of Asylum seekers that our European counterparts don't want to deal with etc.. that has to be paid for in some form (multiple levels of tax), and ... *ends rant before going off-topic*
Having said that, there are companies in the UK that do offer good deals on colocation and transit which compares very favourably to USA, check out the advertising forums.
I'm with MattF on this one! Lock the doors I say!

For various reasons the majority of UK connectivity and data centres are centered around London and Docklands.
- London is densely populated, cost of land is expensive, thus DC space is expensive
- England is an island, thus expensive undersea cables are required to reach anywhere else, this means expensive connectivity
- Server/network equipment costs are more expensive than the US
You can add in other factors such as general cost of living/wages, etc, but those are the main factors.
Those who accuse UK providers of ripping people off are usually people who have no idea of the actual costs of providing such services.

I would paraphrase the question: Why Greek servers are more expensive than UK servers, and why Bulgarian servers are more expensive than the Greek ones - if everything else is in times cheaper?

Well, I guess that is because there are a few or only one main bandwidth provider in those countries, and the prices are too high. I cannot go into co-location here in Turkey because it really costs too much if you have a website which needs high bandwidth. I figured out that people go into web hosting business with just 1/3rd bandwidth of my own website, and when I call the main co-location companies here they advised me to have servers in a different country when they heard the bandwidth amount my website uses in a month.
Now, the situation for UK is a little bit different, I think. It all differs from the countries we have stated above, and I think Paul-Xensia explained it the best. Expensive undersea cables are required to reach anywhere else, cost of land is expensive, DC space is expensive living/wages, etc are expensive....
The reason I started this thread in fact, is to find an answer for those websites whose visitors are mainly from European countries. If we take my website, almost 80% of the visitors are from European countries and my top visitors are from the UK. I never mean that I have problems with USA servers, they always offer the best deals but there must be a way to find cheaper solutions in Europe.
Yes, UK is the country that I love the most but everything is damn so expensive.

UK is known for high taxes and additional costs what makes the job performance really expensive compared to other european countries.
any country with lower network infrastructure and bandwidth capacity is pretty expensive, thats reasonable. the states depose of good network infrastructure combined with cheaper manpower.

Hehe, even Greece have about 10-12 providers but the prices are high. The reason? hehe we have about only 1 year with dsl. And the prices in dsl are expensive too... :)
