View Full Version : Ventures Online down?
theNonsuch 12-26-2001, 03:15 PM I know I should try and post a trouble ticket, but I can't raise their site (or any of my client's sites) at all...
Can anyone reach http://www.venturesonline.com/, or http://www.thenonsuch.com/ ?
I think its a DNS problem as I can't get ping to resolve the TLD, but I'm not sure...
thanks,
Neil
JBIZ718 12-26-2001, 03:24 PM VO is a good company it will probably be fixed shortyl
Joe
I can not reach the server, either.
But when the DNS is not working I'm sure that I can reach the server via the SSH.
Their upstream provider might be having some problems...
hayes 12-26-2001, 03:28 PM does not work for me either? ?
TotalHst 12-26-2001, 03:31 PM That Verio data center must be down because www-hosting.net is out to. They are with VO in that data center so that tells me it is a verio data center issue, unless VO didn't pay their bill ;)
AlaskanWolf 12-26-2001, 03:34 PM I get the same reports, my monitoring service woke me up about 15 ago, so they have had to be down at least 30 minutes now, my mail monitor says its been unable to check email since 49 minutes ago
theNonsuch 12-26-2001, 03:35 PM hm. thanks for the confirmation, folks!
I like VO and the tech guys are usually pretty fast. My only grip (and this seems rather short-sighted on their part) is the fact that their Emergency Pager information is hosted on their site, and not on their off-server emergency domain voinfo.net.

DanielP 12-26-2001, 03:35 PM Verio appears to be having an issue with one of their routers. Normally it wouldn't be a problem except it appears to be the router that were plugged directly into. Technicians are there and are working on it. No eta as of yet but as soon as I get one i'll let you know.
That makes sense.
They recently told me that the Verio Data center will be shuting down shortly, and that they need to move all the servers.
The Verio datacenter might be having some troubles before the shutdown.
theNonsuch 12-26-2001, 03:46 PM Thanks, Daniel!

MDJ2000 12-26-2001, 03:58 PM Hope it's back up soon, I was in the midst of modifying some files. I'm leaving for Foxwoods Casino in 2 hours, and the wife has forbidden me from touching a PC for the next 3 days.
Locutus 12-26-2001, 04:04 PM Can't wait till our servers get moved to our own datacenter :D
pubarso 12-26-2001, 04:06 PM at least the problem is known.
my old host (interserver.net) wouldn't probably have caught it for a few hours....
AlaskanWolf 12-26-2001, 04:06 PM likewise, would love to get a status check on it, my mail mon shows 1:19 minutes and ticking....
tick tock.....
DanielP 12-26-2001, 04:10 PM Well at the moment there's not much to update, other than they are working on two methods to restore access @ the same time, One is replacing the parts in the router and the other is duplicating the IP configs to another router, so whichever is done first will get us online the quickest.
alchiba 12-26-2001, 04:11 PM I feel another router discussion coming on. . .
DanielP 12-26-2001, 04:16 PM Well.. may be a router discussion but unfortinuately these aren't our routers their Verio's.... I've got two Juniper M5's loaded with Gige cards for the new datacenter to be setup for redundant operation... so.. unfortinuately only so much I can control in the world :-/
MDJ2000 12-26-2001, 04:20 PM Cisco , the best reason... they won't drop out of the layer 3 market like some other vendors....grrrrrrr. We're getting rid of all our CoreBuilder 3500's and putting in 6509's, and slowly replacing around 800 FMS hubs and 1100's with 3500XL's.
Kasey 12-26-2001, 04:21 PM Daniel... why aren't there any updates about this (or at least a mention) on VOInfo.net? That is the point of that site, is it not? ;)
And here's to getting some real redundancy at the new NOC. :)
DanielP 12-26-2001, 04:21 PM Heh.. good luck with the 6509's.... thats the one Verio was using that died....
DanielP 12-26-2001, 04:24 PM Well the main reason for it not being on VoInfo is that our billing/informational office is being relocated from OR to Denver Colorado, so the information to get into that is in the back of a vehicle somewhere inbetween here and there... :-/
My fault for not remembering to obtain that before they left

Well, it is just bad luck that you have only had your server for 20 days and caught this downtime...this is NOT an everyday occurrence with VO...they are RARELY down with dedicateds. You will see, the longer you have that server, the better you will like VO!
Glad to know it's not just me. You really ought to have voinfo.net info at hand but I'll let it slide this time. I also like the suggestion of putting phone/page information at voinfo.net because I didn't know who to call. javascript:smilie(';)')
Anyways, it just occurred to me to check this forum and I'm happy to see it's being worked.

Trust me, I highly doubt VO is any happier about it than us, no one is.

I'm probably wrong about this, but help me out.
Why wouldn't Verio make backups of the flash (the part that saves all the config settings) on the router? I just took a Cisco networking class where we had to config routers and set them up for operation, and we were able to make the config, and download it onto a computer (the one consoled into the router). We then erased the router, and loaded the flash back up and it worked fine. Seems like this is the EXACT same and the ONLY reason why they would make that feature possible. It only took us about a minute or so to do all of that. If they already have the router and ARE making backups of the router's config, then it should only take them around a minute to do it.
The class I took was a year ago, so if a term that I used is incorrect, please correct me. Just seems odd that this is taking so long...
f5hosting.com 12-26-2001, 05:04 PM The servers are running again! All is right with the world!
MDJ2000 12-26-2001, 05:06 PM A card is probably hosed.

JBIZ718 12-26-2001, 05:19 PM I will say this, there are not many companies that get my respect, whether it means something or not
VO is a really darn good company
Just like anything else, a problem was identified, techs on the job, and a solution was made.
Good companies get problems resolved asap. Some problems cant be avoided, it just happens, but the true companies triumph under adversity
Good Form VO
Joe
Paul L. 12-27-2001, 08:41 AM Thanks for the kind words JBIZ we do try hard I am glad it shows.
