I have AG Group's Etherpeek installed on my laptop and use it all the time. It rules.

Also, another great piece of networking software installed on my laptop is Raw Logic's NetBrute. Of course I know the author, so I'm biased.

if you're looking for a network scanner, I have http://www.gfi.com/languard/lanscan.htm to be really good.. considering that its freeware!

Try Ethereal, it has been built for aix, linux, freebsd, windows, and many other operating systems. It's based in libpcap.
