i have this weird problem. I currently run win98.

My system is:

Tyan Trinity K7 (S2380)
AMD Slot A Athlon proessor (800mhz)
15 gig primary hd
10 gig hd
40x dvd rom.
i backed up everything off the 15 gig onto the ten gig
then i booted from winxp cd
i was told that you can quick format.

So anyway, it said press f2 to load this, press f6 to load that, etc... I didnt need to load those, so i didnt press anything. Then it said Setup is loadnig (yadda yadda).

Then it said

Setup is starting windows..

And thats it. It just sat there, totally froze, locked up. Caps lock, num locks wouldnt respond, lights wouldnt turn on, hd went silent, cdrom light wasnt on, everything was silent. CTRL ALT DEL wouldnt work, NOTHING.

I tried again ,and waited longer, same thing. I waited atleast 10 mins

Then i went in win98
went in my computer, double clicked on cd rom drive
and clicked on install windows xp
went to New Install
then it said ok copying files, rebooting machine in 15 seconds

So after it rebooted, i was back to th eblue screen that i had when i booted from the cd.

Same deal

Setup is starting windows....

Can anyone help me? i would really like to install winxp

Have you ran that hardware compatibility thing that comes with it to make sure all the hardware is supported? Seems like some hardware issue to me

A friend of mine who insisted on installing XP on his 1.3Ghz Athlon system experienced the same (freeze) problem...

Try going into your BIOS and cranking the speed of your RAM down a notch or two, e.g., changing from a refresh rate labeled as"turbo" to "fast"... (or slower)...

This slow-down of the system seems to be needed on some of the Athlon systems during the install process for XP. Once the XP OS is installed, you can apparently crank the RAM speed back up.
