View Full Version : The WWW phenomenon
Ophelus 12-24-2001, 06:33 PM Is it just me or is it the stupidest thing in the world for professional sites to not allow visitors to obtain there domain without the www
Take for instance
http://www.yahoo.com
http://yahoo.com
Now take for instance..
http://adobe.com
http://www.adobe.com
Are they trying to force you to remember there site address with the www?
I really just don't get it.. and it appears to be a 50/50 margin of sites that force you to use www. vs. not
I personally feel that such admin's/webmasters are total fools..
Chicken 12-24-2001, 06:44 PM Sorry, but I *completely* agree. What's the point then? Another example:
http://www.dn.com
http://dn.com
mdrussell 12-24-2001, 06:49 PM I agree too - annoying for the visitor, so the site loses visitors, and potential customers... when will they learn?
SoftWareRevue 12-24-2001, 06:58 PM  It's going to be awful hard to gain meaningful discussion on this issue if we all agree.
I know . . . . I usually take the other side of things just so we can talk. But I'm not having much luck coming up with a valid opposing view. :(
I've noticed that quite a bit, too, lately. I never bother typing the "www" any more.
Makes me wonder if there is some reason they want people to use the "www" or if they just don't know any better and whoever setup their webservers just didn't set it up right.
ho247 12-24-2001, 07:21 PM It's to do with the DNS records I think, as people usually setup 'domain.com' to point to an IP address in their DNS record, but you've ALSO got to add 'www.domain.com' to point to that IP to, for the WWW version of the domain to work. We ended up doing that for each one of our domains, so we don't lose visitors. That's quite a good tip everyone... as your host about it if your 'www.' whatever.com doesnt work.

And this is the real beef I have with the no 'www' crew. WHY NOT? Why the bloody frog NOT??? Did you forget? Do you not know how? Do you think it isn't needed? Do you just like it when I type in the domain and get the 'does not resolve' and have to re-type it again with the muggerflarkon 'www' ??? What is your malfunction people?! Just DNS it or put a big flashing button with a link to the full story of why you are choosing not to also DNS the domain itself so that I understand where you are coming from.
*shakes fist in air*
Whhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

Nah, there's a very good reason why you need 'www.'
When I tell you, you'll have to agree with me.
And the reason is
SI-Chris 12-24-2001, 10:51 PM Personally I enjoy hearing people stumble over pronouncing www.
"Visit our fabulous site at double u doub u dobbee ewe dot...".
Justin S 12-24-2001, 11:21 PM Heh, yeah, or they just say "ww," forgetting the third one :)
technoart 12-25-2001, 12:19 AM Well on the flip side... ;) There was a time (not very long ago actually) when running a httpd demaon, aka, a Web server, wasn't all that common. (Yegads! The "commercial" Internet at least, will only be 10 years old in 2002!!!!)
These days, I realize that almost everyone considers "the Web" as being the all-and-everything of the Internet , but "the Web" (aka, http) is actually just *one* protocol of the Internet... Thus, the use of "www" within an URL is legit, if you're intending to direct people to your httpd server...
But with all of that said, I do think it's brain-dead these days not to setup a DNS entry for the "sans www" domain name to point to your httpd server. ;)
JustinK 12-25-2001, 01:58 AM I usually e-mailed people about the www. part when I noticed it. Got a couple of "Thank you"s back and a few that actually fixed the problem (usually by making the page redirect... which seemed a little odd). It's worse when someone just refers to their domain name without the www. in front when it doesn't work without it.

Chicken 12-25-2001, 12:58 PM Yeah, I noticed that *that8 example might not have been the best one, but the second one and the one I provided don't work, which works for the example, eh? What? Merry Christmas...
MotleyFool 12-25-2001, 01:38 PM Whenever , I have tried arin.net w/o the www and it just returns a DNS error [www.arin.net works]
