View Full Version : Waiting for my dns to "Propergate"
djfony 12-23-2001, 07:47 PM I know this is borderline wrong forum but I figured it will fit..
I've been around a few host admins and I noticed that they love the word "Propergate" I understand the meaning when used in a sentence.. but the word by itself doesnt exist... anywhere.
Dictionary.com says "huh?"
Encarta.com says ":eek:" and then suggests "Proper Gate" :rolleyes:
So tell me.. where did this word originate from?
Is this just merely an internet word? like "1337 h4x0r" :D
:confused:

Maybe we should just make a definition for propergate. :cool:
TotalHst 12-23-2001, 08:14 PM All of our tech including my self use it, most tech we talk to use it as well.. In our terminology it means to refresh to update. This is why we use it when waiting for a domain to refresh around the world on all the different dns systems of ISP's.
djfony 12-23-2001, 08:16 PM just because everyone uses it doesnt mean its real..... ;)
Pilgrim 12-23-2001, 08:20 PM Well you gave the right answer!
Im waiting for my dns to start spreading rumors about my domain
All the root DNS servers in the world need to know where to find your site (which server/ip it is on) so they can direct ppl there when they type in yourdomain.com
It takes a while for this information to propagate to ALL the DNS servers.
Yes, they do spread rumors. During the night when we sleep they "talk" to each other and tell each other rumors of where to find yourdomain.com
They really like to gossip it seems, 'cause within 72 hours after you change your DNS EVERY dns server in the world already knows about it.
djfony 12-23-2001, 08:23 PM lmao!!!!!! boy you are determined arent you ;)
SoftWareRevue 12-23-2001, 08:29 PM Actually, I've never heard or used propergate.
It's always been propagate.
But them dictionary definitions spooked me.:eek:
Thanks Pilgrim for defining even more.
I'll sleep better now knowing all the dns servers are spreading rumors about my domains :angry:
:D

Although I wrote it in a humorous way, it is true. That is exactly what it means. To make widely known, to publicize, to transmit.
Propagate.
TotalHst 12-23-2001, 08:42 PM I like propergate better but its just me :) . Guess we have to use propagate to be correct.
djfony 12-23-2001, 08:48 PM :D

OMG, I hope they aren't rumors!
From Dictionary dot com:
=================
ru·mor (rmr)
n.
A piece of unverified information of uncertain origin usually spread by word of mouth.
Unverified information received from another; hearsay.
=================
I'd rather have the full verified information floating around.
