Hello
After 48 hours of struggle and 4 hours sleep I now have a PC with Windows XP installed and running.

The last straw was getting it running last night and then TCP/IP disappearing.
Apparently they don't allow you to delete TCP/IP so there is no way to reinstall it like you could with Win 98.
I had to do a recovery to the previous days settings and the only restore point was just after the OS install!
I had to go back through an dreinstall/import everything again.

Its really quite unstable and doesn't like PGP at all.
I have installed the patches this morning (now that I have TCP/IP back) Hopefully they will make a difference.

Oh, and lots of my software wouldn't work and I am having to repurchase new versions............

This is a clean install on a new computer with a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM.
God help the people who get it for Christmas and try to do a "simple" upgrade from Win 98.

Ah yeah..so many people talk about Windows XP problems with PGP and the TCP/IP stack

Keeps saying it can't connect to the sdk thing in Microsoft Networking.
The official info from PGP say to install MS Networking ,but guess what, its already installed.

Its actually a bit more stable now.
Once I got the tcp/ip back I was able to download all the updates and they seem to have helped.

The PGP actually works but does not load on start up.
I have to manually start it.

As I said before, is this really aimed at home users?
Imagine upgrading to it from Windows 98
I cant imagine it working given all the problems I had with
the fresh install.

I've kept win98 on a machine I don't use that often, and win2K on the laptop and main computer. Doesn't sound like I'll be switching anytime soon.

Yep
That would be my advice.
I only bought it becausae I had a new machine and I thought it was best to put the latest version on it.
Definitely the wrong decision if you want a smooth changeover....

Just bought an emachine because needed to replace a workstation. It came with Windows XP on it. I didn't even boot it up in XP once. Went straight to installing Windows 2000 Professional on it. My brother (one of my partners in crime) was like "wait, no, you can just run it in windows 2000 mode or something". I was like "not gonna' do it."
