View Full Version : Which server specs would you choose?
s0nics 07-17-2004, 04:52 PM I'm thinking of buying a dedicated server from TomSyer.net to host some game servers on. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which to pick. Which package would you choose?
Dual Xeon 2.4 w/HT
2GB RAM
2 x 80GB Hard Drives
1000GB Transfer
5 IPS
Monthly Fee: $165

or.
Dual Xeon 2.8 w/HT

2 x 120GB Hard Drives

Bashar 07-17-2004, 05:04 PM 2nd box if it was freebsd :D
or i'd go with 1st one if its redhat.
s0nics 07-17-2004, 05:07 PM Why 2nd if it was FreeBSD and 1st if it was RedHat?
Bashar 07-17-2004, 05:33 PM freebsd can handle more load with less memory if the box is loaded, but when it comes to redhat i always feel it requires more memory to have less load.
this just personal feelings not facts :)
but if you compare the 2nd box can have more disk space where you can do multiple weekly +monthly backups but the first is a bit smaller.
i think it worth the extra $24
icomefromchaos 07-17-2004, 05:57 PM yeah, that's a no brainer. "Would you like the Mustang with the V6 in it? Or would you like the GT?"
s0nics 07-17-2004, 05:59 PM What about the 1GB less RAM it has then the first package?
icomefromchaos 07-17-2004, 06:01 PM ah, missed that. I guess it will have to do a lot with what he plans to do with the server. but when I was talking I was refering to the 2.8 and the 2.4 was the GT ;)
KarlZimmer 07-17-2004, 06:08 PM Depends what you're using it for, but I'd say the first one, generally the 1GB of additional RAM will be more helpful than the additional 400mhz per processor. It was close, but for me, the price clinched the deal.
ChaosHosting 07-17-2004, 06:24 PM Personally I would go for the 1st package.

s0nics 07-17-2004, 06:30 PM Thanks for all your inputs. I guess I'll go with the 1st package. :D
TestMan 07-17-2004, 07:14 PM yes the first one...
2gb of ram....that could easyly make up for the 2.4 to 2.8
and plus.
Also just as an FYI..
they where offering free cpanel on the second package not to long ago.
inteltechs 07-17-2004, 07:43 PM the first one for sure...
Kenny-Infinity 07-17-2004, 07:46 PM take the first, more Ram will be more useful, just my opinion
ISNMIKE 07-17-2004, 07:57 PM More ram will be alot useful for game servers.
2Guns 07-17-2004, 09:40 PM It really depends on how many servers you plan on running. in most cases you will run out of CPU long before you run out of ram. Unless you plan on running alot of smaller game servers. If it is a few bigger servers I would go with the one with more CPU. If its alot of small servers I would still go with the bigger server but add some ram.
Ram isnt the be all and end all of game servers. In most cases 1 gig is more than enough.
ChaosHosting 07-17-2004, 11:51 PM 2Guns, It depends on what he is using it for, that 400mhz difference isn't that much, but a gig of RAM would make a big difference.

s0nics 07-18-2004, 12:02 AM Hmm...would this package compare to the other 2 or is the Hyper Threading of the Dual Xeon packages superior to the Dual Athlon MPs?
Dual Athlon 2800+ MP
1GB Ram
2 x 120GB Hard Drives
1000GB Transfer
5 IPS
Monthly Fee: $159
Setup: FREE
ChaosHosting 07-18-2004, 12:47 AM It depends... do you want to save the money?
-Greg
s0nics 07-18-2004, 12:48 AM Well, seeing the price differences between those 3 packages, money shouldn't be an issue. Just getting the bang for the bucks is what I'm asking. Also, are Dual MP's comparable to the Dual Xeons HT?
2Guns 07-18-2004, 01:42 PM Its actually 800Mhz (400Mhz x 2 CPU's ).
And yes it does depend on what hes doing. And in most cases I would pick more CPU.
