View Full Version : The page cannot be displayed- on a site that works!

Ah yes... the joys of the internet.

I own a reseller plan from www.hostxl.net

Its been about 4days now. I was able to view my site yesterday morning, then 1-2hrs later it came up with a "The page cannot be displayed" error. I asked the host if the servers were down and he said no. So i asked 1 of the other co-owners to view the site, and it looked just fine to him, it was working.

And its the same today, I CANT see the site or reach any of the files, ftp, cpanel, whm, nothing.
But everyone else can see the site..

I was hoping that this is a minor problem, and can be resolved quickly and easily. I have contacted the host with the problem and he is "looking into it".

Does anyone here have a idea of how i can fix this problem?

thanks!,

It is working here on my end. It is working on your co-worker's web site. When you tracert it from your computer, what happens?

.g3aR
07-15-2004, 03:54 PM
huh? if i enter the ip and my username and index like http://67.19.88.36/~username/index.html

no it still doesnt work
it might be the dns server?

Corey Bryant

Go to Start - Run, type in CMD & OK. Now enter: tracert www.hostxl.net

Does that work? Since it is working everywhere else - it seems to be on your end. Did you just move this to a new server?

Hulk

your IP could be banned from the server.

.g3aR
07-18-2004, 02:23 PM
nope nothing is working... i dont understand how it all of a sudden wont let me view it.....

any other ideas?

i've had the support at hostxl look into it but... he cant figure it out.... what do you all think i should do?

The hosting might as well be down, i wouldnt be able to tell a difference.....

Corey Bryant

What is at the end? Does it actually go to your server or does it time out at some point? Are you able to also ping the website?

If the traceroute goes to the server & you can ping it - it might be a browser issue

.g3aR

Once it gets to 12 of 30 it says it times out

And using this site: http://network-tools.com/ you can trace route from another location. I see verio.net might be having some issues. But there is not too much you can do. You need to find out why that hop is not working.

Corey Bryant

Well when you connect to a website, you connect thru some type of a network device (switches, routers, etc).

Now assuming that theplanet.com is the place you are hosting your site, it seems like it is THEIR problem. You need to send them your tracert from your local machine.

.g3aR

Whenever i go to www.theplanet.com it goes REALLLY SLOW to load it.... and i dont get any pictures... can someone tell me the support email address that i need? since i cant seem to get to their site either? So just send them

BAH!!!!! its all related with the firewall... dont ask me how or why

But it seems like whenever the firewall is on.. i CANT view anything hosted by that server.... but when the firewall if off... i CAN...

Is it JUST that particualar server or do you think if i switched to a different hosting company like... TurnKeyResellers.com it will work?

I might not even have to get a refund he might be able to work it out....

Corey Bryant

Can you access turnkeyresellers.com from your home computer? :)

Look on your firewall: Are you blocking: 67.19.88.36

.g3aR
07-19-2004, 07:36 AM
nono its the SERVERS FIREWALL, not mine!

Corey Bryant
07-19-2004, 08:42 AM
Well you have RR right? So you probably have an IP address that stays the same for quite some time? Do you think they might add yout IP address to their firewall to allow it?

.g3aR
07-19-2004, 09:15 AM
thats what i told them...... i dunno ill talk to them but this is really pissin me off.....
Do u all think that if i switch servers it will be the same or it will be different?

i mean i have no idea why it wouldnt allow me... its not like i have any viruses cuz i dont...

yes i have Road Runner Cable

Corey Bryant
07-19-2004, 09:28 AM
Well they might be blocking specific IP addresses because of DOS attacks etc. Yours might be in a block of them. See if they could check that out.

.g3aR
07-19-2004, 09:32 AM
Ok ill check it out. Ill email him

Corey Bryant
07-19-2004, 09:45 AM
Myself - I have RR at home. Was having a problem with their network for two weeks. Of course the type of problem I was having could only be solved via e-mail. But at least I finally got it fixed.

Yurs at at the hosting company level - so maybe they will be able to support this.

.g3aR
07-19-2004, 09:47 AM
Yes. Im pretty sure its theplanet servers....

Whenever i go to theplanet.com it goes REAL slow to load and most of the time it doesnt load... i wonder if its the kind of software packages on their that for some reason doesnt support what i have.... its wierd

Corey Bryant
07-19-2004, 09:51 AM
I doubt it is the software since you already stated it was a firewall issue.

.g3aR
07-19-2004, 10:20 AM
right i ment the package includes that certain firewall

ive never known a firewall to do that though...

Corey Bryant
07-19-2004, 10:29 AM
Well firewalls are designed to block certain traffic. For example - it can block specific ports, a range of ports, specific IP addresses, and a range of IP addresses.

If theplanet was experiencing a DOS attack from say 66.45.45.45 & your IP address is 66.45.45.46 - they might decide to block IP range 66.45.45.40-65.45.45.50 & your IP address is blocked from accessing that server.

I remember about 5 years ago, one of my local firewalls went crazy when I was publishing a site. It asked me if I wanted to block a certain IP address. Well I chose yes. And the next thing I know - I could not access my website. Took a little remembering to finally realize what I did.

Firewalls can be great when they are understood & set up properly
