View Full Version : Hosting my own site?

Hey everyone,

I've been having way to much trouble trying to keep my websites online. Every host I move to has to tell me to leave because my sites are too big, and I don't have enough money to move to a dedicated server and buy extra bandwidth. So I've decided to host them myself. Only thing is, I need to know whether or not a dedicated computer and two bound dsl lines will be able to handle this.

Here's the computer I will be hosting with -- in a nutshell:

- 550Mhz PIII
- 256MB PC100 SDRAM
- 20GB Seagate IDE HD (7200rpms)
- I'll be running linux and apache ws

The computer will be used solely for hosting the sites, and for nothing else. It is also well cooled.

I currently have cable, but will be getting two dsl lines run into the house, which will be totally seperate from the cable and my home network. Here's the DSL specs:

- 2x: 384Kbs Up and Down
- Most likely using: http://www.nexland.com/nexlandstore/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=NO&Product_Code=200040
to make the two connections run together.

Do you think with these specs the server can handle approx. 300GB of data transfer per month?

If not, what upgrades should be made to make it possible?

Also, could someone give me a relative speed at which a 20KB page would load for a 56k user through the server?

Thanks for your time!

My thoughts on hosting such a site at home and trying to balance outbound traffic on two dsl lines aside, you will not have enough bandwidth.
Even at 100% capacity 24 hours a day a total of 768k of bandwidth can't handle 300 gigs a month. It is a physical impossibility. You would simply need a bigger connection. 300 gigs would max out a 1 megabit connection almost 24 hours a day. You would need more than that for it to actually work.

Hi,

How much are the DSL lines?

100Mbps,

Currently, two dsl lines would cost me $140 a month. Your service sounds great, but would it be available in my area? I would even sacrifice much of the D/L speed for increased Upload speed if that's possible. I'm very interested in this, if you have any more details, email me: matthawk@optonline.net

Thanks!
