Hi All,

I posted something similar in the Web Hosting Forum. I am a newbie looking for opinions and ideas.

I have a 100Mbps enabled ethernet connection that sees about 20Mbps download and 15Mbps upload from speedtests outside my ISP's network and about 90Mbps within the network.

What could you do with a connection like this? Would there be a high demand. Can you "co-locate" from home? This is an idea I have for a Service Offering. A large enough pipe to your home to do for yourself what others would charge to do from their premises. You essentially work from home, run your office/business from home. Subsidize your rent, tax write-offs etc.

Is this a good concept?

TIA,

Simon

Just wondering...How come you have such a connection in your home?

Let's just say I used to work for an ISP.

Anyone? Is this so far fetched?

Well, you would have to invest a good amount of money in all the networking equipment (routers, switches, UPS, etc.) -- and then you run into the problem of redundancy. If you only have one connection going into your home, what happens if the connection goes down?

Overall, what you're planning to do would be a lot like starting your own datacenter -- NOT a cheap process. Obviously, you'd be able to save on the monthly rent (since you're doing it from within your home) but you would still have to invest a considerable amount of money into the servers, equipment, etc. That being the case, it would probably be less expensive in the long run to go ahead and co-locate it in a datacenter... if you're looking for reliability.

I'm curious as to the "I used to work for..." explanation. That doesn't explain how you have massive bandwidth (for a home user) in your house.

I'm not saying you're lying at all, I'm just skeptical of the feasiblity. Unless you are in an apartment within wireless range of the building or something.

I'm in an apartment that is fed by fiber. There are about 60 such apartment buildings in the area. This ISP own's it's own fiber network. I used to work in Network Services.

I'm doing some research to see if for $200/month or so, there'd be any interest. It's not for everybody but I figure there are some to whom Cable or DSL is not nearly enough.

Who else could use this big connection?
