The web hosting market has never been stronger and all signs off growth are pointing up. I'd say go for it, but make sure you've planned out your venture well.

Also if your planning on hosting more than just a few users I highly recommend you get a dedicated server. That way if one of your users does something wrong you can just terminate that account rather than the reseller hosting company terminating your master account thereby causing major problems for all your other clients.

I'm sure most reseller providers will work with the reseller in these situations, rather than terminate an entire hosting account. :)

I recommend you to find a good reseller account on a good server with 99% uptime. The job isn't easy, not like you will just make a site and customers with money will flow on you. You have to advertise a lot and make your plans really cheap so you can get more customers.

Yes, I agree. You have to spend some money on advertising otherwise your potential clients may not be able to find you amongst the thousands of other hosting companies around. Also, if you are planning on getting a reseller account, you may not be able to match the prices and packages that the larger hosts have on offer, if this is a concern for you, then you should think about looking at a dedicated server or possibly a VPS (Virtual Private Server) which is sort of the inbetween option; this way you can start off not too small, but also not to big as to be loosing great amounts of money if everything doesn't go according to plan. If you are just starting out though most people would suggest a reseller account to be getting on with. This way you can gain experience in the most important areas first before plunging in at the deep end.

And of course don't forget. It's very easy to become a reseller. But it requires a lot of work and dedication to become a "good" reseller.

The market is full of people who thought it was a way to a quick buck. But they didn't envisage what happens when you get problems that are out of your control. If your buying your reseller plan direct from one of the big hosting companies at least you know support is one step away. If your further down the chain you have to wait for your supplier to get in touch with their supplier and so on. That could take forever! In the meantime your clients are making tracks elsewhere because they a fed up waiting. So do think very carefuly about where you sign up.

Also keep in mind that you will be dealing with peoples livleyhoods. It's a responsibility you can't take lightly. If your not on the ball you can cause a hell of a lot of problems for people.

If your really dedicated though it can be a very rewarding way to make a living. But if you become succesful...don't bank on having too much of a social life ;)

Best of luck :)

We are with HeartInternet.co.uk

Our own experience with them has been extrememly good so far. Support has always gotten back to us within the hour no matter what time of day or night. They have been very helpful and obviously know their stuff.

I know some people will ridicule them for offering unlimted web space and bandwidth. But all the people who are with them at the moment that I know of are not complaining :) Heart Internet is owned and run by the same guys who set up 123-reg.co.uk, Hosteurope and Webfusion.

Another host we have used a lot over the last 12 months has been www.meirhosting.net . The guys their, David and Stu always pull out the stops to help you with any problems and they have a good support forum.

Not saying either of these two are the best. They just work for us.

I would check out e-insites. I have used them before I did what you are doing and became my own hosting company. I think what you are doing is good. When I started there was noway I could afford a whole dedicated server. I would start with there reseller package as it offers soo much for so little. They have an excellent datacenter, uptime, good customer support, and everything else :) They also have some of the lowest dedicated server pricing around too. So when you do need to move up, you can check them out. e-insites.com

You dont need to up your budget in the beginning necessarily, but do concentrate on the many great ways to market for free or low cost.

Good luck.

Why make someone get a server. Even if you have a server and one of your users are spammers you can still get into trouble. One server for a lot of sites is ok even hosting in a server cluster is ok or maybe better as you have the use of many servers and you can never do as much on just one server. I would get one server for just my own domains if it were very busy like in the 150 plus gig of traffic or more and over 20 gigs of disk space or more. But even then it may not be worth it if I could put my site in a cluster of servers that would be better as now database, mail, web, etc are all distributed so you can even have even better responce. A good host would never shut down anyone with out finding out for sure what is going on.

Ok. In my evil personal put downing opinon I would say it is a little late to start a hosting company. I feer the space and bandwith will be so avalible in the future it will all be either free or dirt cheap.

Just my opinon which doesnt need to be quote or even read. Good luck by the way

I have to say that if you pursue your own business whether it's hosting or selling gift baskets, that you should write out a business plan. This is something that I have done for my web design business and I am glad I did. I am about to launch my own hosting business as well and yes, I am in the process of developing my business plan for this one as well.

Honestly, you will be far better off if you do one for yours because knowing the market, industry, location, and understanding business (a biggy) is so important. A business plan will help you focus and will also help you to see if there really is potential for you.

When I did one for my web design, I really thought I knew my market and client base....far from it....I discovered that I was looking at the wrong market and by doing my business plan (and being honest with yourself) I was able to make it work. If I didn't, I would be out of business by now.

In a nutshell summary....if you are thinking about going into business, do a business plan. You will thank yourself later.

:)

I agree about the business plan.. I hadn't done one out in the beginning and I'm wishing I did... It gives you much better direction and keeps your more on target.
