I think a merchant account, what ever i need to be able to accept credit cards

Well both will allow you to accept credit cards. A merchant account is in your name while a third party processor - you use their merchant account to accept credit cards

do you already have a business registration?

In hong kong yes

We use HSBC and WorldPay, so far it works great!
