anyone have any slackware dedciated servers out there?

How come i always see redhat? What's the deal? I never see any slackware.

This may sound like a dumb question, but a friend wants to get a dedicated server, and he was telling me "Do you think i'll be able to setup mysql on a slackware server, i mean i heard it was hard to set up with slackware."

I personally dont see why anyone would have problems, does anyone else? I mean is there something i'm not aware of here?

I think that if he got it he would be able to setup mysql, apache with the works, everything just like if you were to doit on a redhat server

Am i correct?

Slackware isn't that bad. It doesn't hold your hand like RH does, but it's not hard to install things on it. We run Slack 8 on one of our servers because it's the only Linux we'll touch with a 10-foot pole. We have a dedicated customer who uses SuSE and I personally was impressed with the distro, but I always see SuSE advisories all over the place so I won't touch that one either.

FreeBSD all the way. :) Btw, mysql installed like a dream on our slack box.

As am I. :) We always highly recommend FreeBSD and Slack to our customers unless they specifically need RH for some reason (control panels).

You should not have any problems with Slackware. It is a fine distribution.

I think most people go with RedHat because it is easier to install/maintain and it is more visible.

Personally, I like RedHat because of:
1) The kickstart installs. You can have an entire system running in under 5 min. customized to your exact specs.
2) RPM is nice for maintaining and upgrading system utilities and non-services. I don't think RPM is good for anything that you run as a service. I like to compile from source things like Apache, SSH, BIND, PHP, etc..

As far as security goes, the argument that one distro is more secure than another just isn't valid. Linux is Linux, it just depends on how YOU lock it down after the install.

Slakware is cool. Mysql can be easily installed. And as mentioned before it is one of the finest in Linux Boxes.... :)
My first choice is FreeBSD.
In Linux I love
Slackware
Debian
Redhat

But i must say that redhat development is faster than all the others..

These are the ones with more original ideas. Most of the others are enhanced Redhats , slackware etc....

Have a great day :)
