View Full Version : Good Cheap ($15 or less/mo) host - Tera-Byte.com?
SiliconIce 12-20-2001, 04:21 PM I am looking for a good cheap host.
250-400MB space
12-20GB transfer
(more likely 15-20GB)
PHP, CGI, MySQL
$10-15/month
Is tera-byte any good? They look good on paper.
HostRocket looks good too, but I have heard many bad things.....
avara 12-20-2001, 05:58 PM I can definitely recommend Tera-Byte. And considering their prices, support there is usually very good.
SiliconIce 12-20-2001, 06:21 PM Thanks, anyone else used them? I hate to base a decision on one opinion....
avara 12-20-2001, 06:29 PM Try using the search function to find out what people are saying about Tera-Byte. ;)
SiliconIce 12-20-2001, 06:31 PM Sorry, I will. :) Thanks!
mneedham 12-24-2001, 10:56 PM anyone kno if they offer subdomains, I can't see it on their site?
Kamika_Z 12-25-2001, 05:01 PM They use DNS Wildcards, so anything.yourdomain.com directs to yourdomain.com. To get around this, you could write a simple php script or any other language that looks for the tag blah.yourdomain.com in the url and changes it to yourdomain.com/blah. I can also definitely reccomend them, I've had no downtime, and their support always responds within a couple hours of a support request.
DomiNET.net 12-25-2001, 05:31 PM Do you want your subdomains points an ip outside the webhosting company?
BeCoMe1 12-26-2001, 12:49 PM The support at tera-byte is very very good, they answer your mails ASAP, but sometimes there is a downtime on their server but with the support they get it on running so this is not a big problem. I would go for them...
theNonsuch 12-26-2001, 03:20 PM Yup. Tera-byte are pretty fine. Besides the fact that they don't offer subdomains, their services are really good for the price.
My only complaints (and I haven't figured out if its my fault or theirs) are that I have weird POP mail timeouts trying to retrieve my mail from the server... which happens on a couple of different connections.
They did try really hard to track down the problem but couldn't find a solution... but, pretty good overall.
Also there seems to be an on-going but sporadic problem of idiots running scripts on my shared server which suck up all of the resources. I know this is a danger of shared hosting, but it seems to happen with Tera-byte more often than the other companies I host sites with. Chalk that up to their popularity and cheap price, I suppose.
HTH,
Neil

I think Tera-byte dont just throw people out when they use all the ressources, I dont think they warn their customers as much as other hosts do, they accept many things, I think, but they are very good although...
Skizzik 01-23-2002, 02:46 AM I have a question: does tera-byte offer SSI? it didnt say anything about it on the info page.
Thanks.
AzN StyleZ 01-23-2002, 03:05 AM hi skizzik. and yes it does. my site WAS going to go with tera byte, but they gave me bad support. all i wanted was to process my account, then they ignored me, added on another 200 onto my account for some bull#@$ i dont know. i cancelled immedietly. im not the only one who had bad experience......but, it seems just in this forum. people at vbulletin.com dont have good stories :/
Matt Probert 02-14-2002, 02:44 PM I have used Tera-Byte to host The Probert Encyclopaedia since June 200, both on a shared account and now on a virtual server. There support and prices are excellent, I can telephone at any time of day and get help when I need it.
A very reliable host too, I noticed a few 5 minute outages on the shared account over six months, but that's nothing spectacular.
I recommend tera-byte without reservation.
