View Full Version : Transfer registrar...seamless or not?

This is more of a question addressed to people who have in the past transferred their domain (not site) for one registrar to another....was the process seamless? In other words, did you experience any downtime during the switch?

I emailed both Register.com and 000domains, and got two different answers, even though I said the DNS info for the domain would remain unchanged before and after.

Thanks for any insight offered!

The process can and should be seamless, though it depends on the registrars involved. A firend of mine still has a few domains with alldns.com and has had problems with them. As soon as they get resolved, he's going to transfer them to 000domains.com. where he has the rest (as I do all of mine).

I recently (last month) renewed and transferred a domain form NSI to 000domains and it did go smoothly.

It was seamless for me.. I moved from NetSol to WebLaunching.net. The process was seamless. Dint have any problem at all. NetSol gave a prompt reply, which was suprising. :)

Happy moving!!

I thought I replied to this, hmmmm. Seamless... but you'll have to update contact info again. The DNS always transfers, sometimes some of the contact info doesn't (not registrant info, the other contact info).

Hi there -

I transferred a domain from Joker.com (CoreNIC) to OpenSRS recently - I was finding that any NS changes through Joker took forever to update...

The process itself wasn't terrible, though initially I was going to transfer it to register.com and would highly recommend folks stay away from 'em... terrible service and very surly phone support.

I had around two days downtime, which I had expected. Besides that, nothing else to report...

Hope this helps -
neil

From Network Solutions to Register.com it went well no problems to report from it cept that NetSol waited for the last min to release the domain but otherwise it was very easy:)

I transferred many from net sol to jumpdomain.com (a tucows reseller). it was conpletely seemless, as it should be. Your nameservers is not changed or deleted whatsoever in the root database, just the registrar of record.

I have transferred from NetSol->Register.com the move was seamless. I have DN's at NetSol, Register, Dotster, and Joker. I have found the budget registrars lack the tools and support for domain owers to use to make moves and changes seamless.

Like they say, you get what you pay for.

The transfer of course should always be seamless and most of the time it is. As long as all the contact information is correct and the old registrar releases the domain name in the required time there should be no problem. Certainly there should be no downtime if you are not changing your DNS entry. While I agree that in general you get what you pay for you can still get a domain registered for a decent price with quality. We use OpenSRS at the moment and the only problems with transfers have been user errors (bad e-mail, cancelling old hosting account immediately, etc). Just my 2 cents!

That's why I use my ISP email address for the contact email for all of my domains. Then you don't have to worry about a server being down and losing the email needed to change your information.
