Hi all,

I was talking to one host and they were saying that the Windows 2000 server license was USD$1000 up front. I'm guessing this is Windows 2000 Advanced Server? ... but I've seen other hosts offering dedicated Windows 2000 servers with no such costs involved? Are they running Windows 2000 Professional? with third-party webserver software? I'm not complaining, just curious. What webserver software would they be using?

Also, does anyone know of any good hosts that have dedicated Windows 2000 servers *and* charge per GB? (ie like tera-byte.com? approx $2 perGB) My server won't be serving content, but rather downloading data. MOST of the traffic will be inbound, it will not be acting as a webserver. Due to this, I intend on using 100GB per month, I don't mind paying for it, I don't want to upset the ISP. tera-byte.com looks good but they have a USD$1000 Windows Advanced server cost, other hosts aren't charging this (I'm guessing they're running Win2k Pro?) I don't need Advanced server anyway, I just need the Windows platform.

PJS.

Yes, Windows 2000 Advanced Server is a little over $1,000.00.but I've seen other hosts offering dedicated Windows 2000 servers with no such costs involved? Are they running Windows 2000 Professional? No, they run Windows 2000 Server w/ IIS 5.0 (notice no Advanced in there). You cannot really use Windows Professional as a multi-site webserver. Most host's include the software in the monthly fee.

You do not need "Advanced Server" unless you need load-balancing or clustering. That is the only major difference between the two (besides a few hardware things). Server is about 1/2 the cost of Advanced Server.

Hope that helped!

I asked them and they said it was $1000USD for Windows server, not advanced server. I did a little research too, I think that price sounds about right? So... running Windows 2000 basically adds $1k to the price of a server? I've seen hosts offering dedicated W2k machines for < $200p/m, no setup! ???

Windows 2000 Server is about $500-$750.00.

Yes, some hosts offer it for $200.00/mo but it's built into the monthly price.
