View Full Version : Anyone know how to fix the problems that dnsreports.com displays?

Hello, I had recently found out about dnsreports.com, and I have a couple of warnings that I totally do not understand, and I also see that it doesnt explain how to correct the problems it finds. One of the errors displays this:

WARNING: Your SOA EXPIRE time is : 3600000 seconds. This seems a bit high. You should consider decreasing this value to about 1209600 to 2419200 seconds (2 to 4 weeks). RFC1912 recommends 2-4 weeks. This is how long a secondary/slave nameserver will wait before considering its DNS data stale if it can't reach the primary nameserver.

What does that mean, what impact would it have if I lower the value, and how do I go about changing the value? Thanks

Usually warnings you don't need to worry about, when you get a bunch of red "FAIL"s around, that's when you have a problem.

Thanks, well see I have some unexplained DNS problems and I am trying to do anything I can to fix this. Could anyone tell me how I can fix these two errors:

WARNING: All of your nameservers (listed at the parent nameservers) are in the same Class C (technically, /24) address space, which means that they are probably at the same physical location. Your nameservers should be at geographically dispersed locations. You should not have all of your nameservers at the same location. RFC2182 3.1 goes into more detail about secondary nameserver location.

WARNING: You only have 1 MX record. If your primary mail server is down or unreachable, there is a chance that mail may have troubles reaching you.

Thanks a lot

Get a nameserver at another DC (or ask your own dc to have IP from different C class)

Create another MX record for domain.

Those two warnings that are listed are only for redundancy purposes. Perhaps you want to have a perfect DNS config, according to dnsreport.com, but it's not really necessary.

The very first warning you posted is solved by simply lowering the SOA EXPIRE a bit. Angel78 posted the answers for the other two. But really, none of these are anything to worry about at all.

Hi,
not really needed normally, but if email is really important to
you, dnsmadeeasy.com can provide you with 3 backup MX
servers for $7.95 / year. They will retian upto 1 GB of mail for
upto 14 days, so even if you have a server failure, it gives you
plenty of time to put a new server in place without losing any
email.

Note that you would have to add the new MX records through
WHM, and the edit MX part of cpanel would not work properly
after you do this.

Note that I have nothing to do with dhsmadeeasy other than
being a customer.
