I was speaking with a friend at Savvis earlier today, and he was talking about some of the new stuff they're working on.
Main thing they're going is working on blocking DDOS all up-stream, one of the things alot of hosts are doing.
They're also expanding their pipe. Since MS is about to release SP2, they're expanding their capability up to 150Gbps.
None of that is really to amazing, but this next bit really caught my ear:
I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, maybe UDPN or UPDN, Utility something. To really dumb it down, it's an advanced VPS. to try and explain more fully:
The main idea is to create a farm of servers, and they don't have to be geographically close - They can be on opposite sides of the world - And completely virtualize the process of things.
I'm not good at explaining things like this, and I'll take any questions you guys give me to him, and that should help.
But, basicly, you have all of your resources put together, and then can delegate them. It really brings down the cost on alot of things. He was citing a four didget figure on firewalls being brought down to $200 a month, I believe it was $3600.
I believe it automatically load balances itself, so you never have to worry if "What if X server is fulll...", and it will automatically place the client where he can fit, depending on the resources you allocate.
I don't know if they're going to license this out to other companies, or if they're going to keep it exclusively for themselves. I also don't know if it was developed in house, or by contract.
I'll be speaking with him again soon, so if you guys want me to ask him any questions about it, just post them here.
Edit: Removed ID on my friend, he didn't say any of this was confidential or anything, so I don't think it is, but I don't want him to get in trouble if it is.
