View Full Version : FC1 vs. FC2 for Ded Servers

I noticed a lot of dedicated server providers only offer Fedora Core 1 instead of Fedora Core 2, and the ones that offered FC2 removed it.

An example of this can be found in LayeredTech. They used to offer FC2 as an option, but it's now gone. I was wondering: why? Is FC2 too unstable for that kind of environment? Is FC1 simply better than FC2?

FC2 is kind of unstable, esp. with cpanel.

Didn't they have some security problems last month?

I am asking this because for the last six months with RHE, there was not a single evidence of security holes, while staying 5 days on FC1 with the same same security measures as on RHE ended up in the server being rooted, according to the LT techs.

I had a server with FC2 and Cpanel and it kept crashing a lot, since we replaced FC2 with FC1 everything has been great.

About security... well, every server can be rooted if you just keep it at basic install, you will always need to tweak security settings (and I'm not talking about WHM's security section).

heh, not a lot of people understand that, mainly people who think cPanel will do everything for you.

For the most part, you will have to wait before you use Fedora 2 with any CP, mainly cPanel, as cPanel is sort of bloated, so it needs a lot more testing.

Fedora core 2 by itself is fine.

This is a new one on me.
I highly doubt it, as SEATi said, you can't always blame the OS for being rooted.

With control panel: FC1
Without control panel: Either will do, preferably FC2

Keep with FC1 and you can update to 2.6 easily if you want it.

Will your tutorial on how to compile to 2.6.7 with init tools work on a fedora edition?

Thank you!
