View Full Version : How is the webhosting business?

Well, I'm certainly not a hosting company myself, and I don't really intend to start any time soon, but I'm very curious as to what it's like running a webhosting business (since I've used and visited so many hosts). Say, for example, how often do you receive new customers, and about how many do you have? How many of them usually request support? Are there many troublemakers? Do most customers sign up for the low-end, or high-end plans?

I think what he is trying to say is do a search to turn up some results on some companies.

The replies in this thread pretty much indicate what's going on in many corners of the Web hosting business: all smilies and no substance.

How many of them usually request support? Are there many troublemakers? Do most customers sign up for the low-end, or high-end plans? As far as technical-related questions, I'd say 1-2% of customers will ask a question on any given day (there are also administrative/billing questions of course). I'm not sure exactly what you mean by troublemakers; if you mean "problem" customers, sure, every business sees them from time to time and Web hosting is no exception. As far as low-end vs. high-end, the majority are low-end because the majority of websites are low-end.

Different hosts are going to answer the questions differently, depending on the type of customers they target. If your market niche is offering every Perl module in the universe, you're probably going to attract a higher-end client.

So who decides what "OUR WAYS" are???

okay, sorry all. In my attempt to summarize I've realized "our ways" require a verbose response;
(original response to Lancia)
look through the forums, search for the information you're looking for. All of these issues you've presented have been discussed numerously by the webhosts themselves in various locations around this site.
(original response to netsolutions)
yes, thank you for noticing, that is exactly what I'm trying to say. "Look around the forums and you'll find more than your answer quickly"
(response to ckpeter)
Although I've contributed more to this thread than you so far, you have contributed to any future thread I may post by pointing this out. Thank you.

(response to Asia)
"our ways" are evidently not written in stone, the internet is an ever-changing medium and "we" make up the rules as we go (and are quick to point out when someone hasn't adopted "our ways" yet)
(response to SoftWareReview)
maybe just an amendment to the rules
(response to netsolutions)
thank you for clarifying that ALBEIT too late
(response to dbnet)
(no response to netsolutions)
(response to Intelligent Hosting)
because that varies so widely, I originally suggested "searching or browsing these forums" to collaborate a summation of differing opinions and statistics on the various hosts that use this site as well as past experiences with them and some others.
1-2% ask technical questions of YOUR company but that varies so widely from host to host that there's no definitive or even general answer.
Different customers are going to ask different questions depending on the type of market the host is targeting. If your market niche is offering every perl module in the universe your customers are probably going to ask more technical questions (webmasters and programmers that know their stuff) Thereagain however, "everybody's different".
(response to michaeln)
"WE" decide "OUR WAYS"

Maybe that will clarify my future if not my past intentions (sometimes one word provides a simpler answer than a paragraph) I'm not looking to gain nor lose friends or enemies here, I'm mostly learning but when I see someone else who's learning I can try to point them in the right direction from my experience here and others can do the same (I believe that's how a forum works)

1-10 new customers a day

150 and counting

probably 1 out of 5 for minor things (where do I upload my files) 1 out of 20 that are having major problems (typically cgi related, but I help them anyway).

not really, I have 1 or 2 that might be problems later

low end

As for the business, it's awesome. No complaints.

It completely depends on the host and the type of cutomers you get.

attract a higher-end client.

Tell me about it... most threads that start off asking several fairly specific questions about running a webhosting business (like income, how many customers, etc) often spiral into a bunch of off topic replies and as such I haven't really been following WHT as much lately, whereas I used to stop by every day. It seems questions regarding things like credit card processors, dealing with domain registrars, etc seem to stay on track, but don't contain much more information than what I could find using a search engine (in other words, the more technical side to running any busines).

I recall one post about hosting income, someone said something about a vacation and then it got out of hand when the discussion turned into discussing said vacation, having a laptop vs. having someone cover for you or somesuch (in either case equally useless).

Thankfully Dixiesys saved this thread....
