Can't get it working!..no matter what I try, I always get this ugly gray screen with an X curser.

ya thats twm. You gotta edit the file $HOME/.vnc/xstartup and make it a one line file pointing to the full path of where gnome is located. All i use the vnc is blackbox. I hate gnome anyway and vnc it would be really slow. like for black box my file looks like

/usr/local/bin/blackbox &

then kill the old server and start it up
