I'm thinking of getting a cheap dedicated raq3i to work with. Are there any known problems with these? I'm only a programmer, I do know how to get around in linux, but I've got no clue when it comes to security.. I don't wanna get hacked. Are there minimum things that I should ensure are setup on the raq?

while, you can't lock up any box completely, there are many things you can do with a RAQ that will help.

you should read through most of the posts on the RAQ forum as well as the security forum. rackshack's security forum is also a good place to check out.
