I have been wondering for a long time how pool.com determines the list of expiring domains?
Last I heard internic pulled the root COM zone files so I was wondering how anyone could detrmine when all .com's were expiring......

It's readily available information that you can get through WHOIS. Go to www.internic.org, type in your domain, and you find out the details you want. Registration date, last date updated, expiration date, contact details, etc.

They probably have tools that figure out the registrar and do a whois lookup directly to them, so they have the most up-to-date information.

Thanks. I see how they can determine a given domain, but where would they get a list of all of the domains?

From a post I made in another thread:

You have to download the TLD zone files from the appropriate authority for each TLD.

You'll have to get the TLD zone files from each authority separately. If you want to get the com zone file, go to http://www.verisign.com/nds/naming/tld/ to try to get into their file access program. Alternatively, you may be able to find other places which have the file, though possibly outdated. Do some googling to find the sources for the TLD zone files.

zonefiles doesn't have expiring domains info, there seems to be another database containing redepmtion periond domains and pending delete domains which sites like snapcheck.com and pool/namewinner etc.. are using

Zone files don't need expiring domains' info. You get the zone file, run a whois on each domain, and you can find out when each one expires.

You can also get a subscription to exody which has already done the hardwork for you

I'm sorry but I don't see where I can download the zone file :(

Thanks.

its not an easy task, you need to fill the pdf form and fax it to them, only then they will email you an ftp access to download the zonefiles.

as been said exody access can do the work for you, you have a look at dropwatch.com also offer the same services seems to be (never tried them)
