Who's better in term of pricing, support, and reliability?

Any other dedicated providers you'd recommend?

Thanks all.

LayeredTech has their servers in the same datacenter as Server Matrix. I would think that LayeredTech has better support since it would be hard to survie for them with out it.

Try sending them an e-mail and check their responce time. Or call their support lines and see how long does it take for a real human to pick up the phone.

If this was a poll layeredtech would be my vote. Better support, better server prices, TP portion of the DC, which I believe is better.

That is a hard one. I have had nearly 6 servers throughout 2 years with servermatrix and I REALLY like them alot!

Today I was looking with a friend of mine and we wanted to get 4 boxes setup with a switch for in network transferring, 2 Windows, 2 linux for gaming machines. I called Layeredtech and right away got some questions answered by a guy named Chris. He new everything about how we can customize the setup and very friendly......After about 5 hours of thinking and financing, I ended up buying ALL 4 boxes with them, HD addons, 100mbit on each, and waived some setups.

Already I can see myself their because #1 they took the time to walk me through my options #2 they are in a very good datacenter and I look forward to enjoying my stay with them.

I inquired both LT and SM about whether their servers are server-grade or desktop-grade servers and I've response from both of them.

LT honestly said most of their dedicated servers are desktop-grade servers whereas SM said their all their servers are server-grade. Should I believe SM on this?

One thing is their pricing are very comparable.

Thanks,
Tom

Unless SM changed something recently last I checked those pretty white boxes taking up all that rack space aren't rackmounts or server grade.

Imago, can you explain this a bit further?

Tom, This is quite a debate, the first thing which you would have to find out is what actually is "Server Grade" which is not that easy to define.

To me the difference between server grade and desktop grade is server grade servers are designed to stay up all the time and not based on ATX form like desktops. Server hardware can handle heat better and less likely to fail due to overheat.

Layeredtech never answered my sales inquiry. SM did within 30 minutes. Signed up with them yesterday morning. The box was promptly delicered within 24 hours. My first support inquiry (something coming from my end - not an actual problem with the box) was handled very fast (less than 30 minutes).

tnguyen, DELL offers "servers" which come in tower cassings.. As I said, this is hard to actually define.

Wow thats very unlike SM. For me they took 5days once and 7 days another time.

don't forget SM boxes will get you an orbit@theplanet control panel, on LT you won't get one. but the boxes are fine in both cases. prices are yummy with LT, no doubts.

I have never had a box setup in less than 24 hours with SM, I have had some setup in less than 12 hours. They are very fast with their setup.

Well, I had 10 terrible days with Tomsyer (5 waiting for the setup and 5 online followed by abrupt cancelation of the service initiated by LeyeredTechs) that costed me almost 200 dollars for the hosting, several days offline, half dropping of our Google indexes - we've lost about 200,000 indexed pages, so the orders have been cut proportionally, and several of our loyal customers.

Now, I have learned my lesson and will never go with resellers - no matter how enticing their offers. Just stick to ThePlanet and their Total Control servers. BTW, they have set up my server for 16 hours - not 5 days.

Why would you need to use orbit with LT servers? Orbit is just a system where you can view bandwidth usage & submit trouble tickets basically, it's nothing special. Just a few things condensed into one.
