View Full Version : Tomsyer response & Problems .....
VapoRub 07-08-2004, 11:13 AM Alright here is my review so far:
I have been a customer for less than a month.
I have gotten their p4 2.8 / 1 GB RAM / 2x 80 GB HD special. Server was delivered, server was secured by us, Fantastico installed, installed additional software, security measures, mounted the backup drive and balabing, ready for production. I have decided to let the server idle before we did a kernal upgrade.
Two days ago we did a routine check and it shows that apache/cpanel is non accessible via the IP. I have decided to check SSH for logs. The root didnt work. Ok so I thought I might have forgotten the ROOT PW.... Ticket submitted, took them a day to reply, waited for another day for pw change.
Yesterday, I've gotten the new password and logged into SSH and I have found something very unusual!
1) I swear they just gave me a new server with the same IP.
-Fantastico was not there
-WHM asks me to run setup again
-Security Software dissappeared
-Server Hostname is not the same
-Apache with PHP default (no modules)
-My 2nd HardDrive was no where to be found on the server. Physically dissappeared!
-IPs were missing.
-All the installed software were missing.
Ok after I find that I asked for a honest answer and the techs simply replied "they seemed to have reimaged the server, we will look into the second HD" without tell me why.
All I can say is thank god I did not use it to balance work load on the production servers yet. If I had customers and backups on it, I would have been in the black for a good amount of time. Until Tomsyer can resolve this missing HD issue and explain to me honestly on what happened, I can not give them a good rating. Can you imagine if I put actual customers on the box and the box gets wiped randomly?!!?!
DediTech 07-08-2004, 11:50 AM I dont think it is the resellers fault... most likely managed.com
VapoRub 07-08-2004, 12:21 PM I with their ThePlanet DC.

They colocate on The Planet...
Imago 07-08-2004, 12:31 PM Well, this seems to be a routine scenario for the LT support staff who manage the Tomsyer servers at ThePlanet DC. I am not going to describe in details my case because it is even more apalling. In the final analysis I had to cancel the server with only 5 days service and two bills for $106 and for $75 for reimaging.
The server - after waiting five days to be set up - has been plugged offline in the end of the next five days without even warning me it has been rooted. I was not allowed to perform security audit. The only thing - after two days of clearing up the situation - I was allowed was to order a $75 OS reload, which was not performed in the following 24 hours. So I have cancelled it, but my credit card was already charged.
One week later Tom D. sent me an invoice from Layered Technologies saying that server # 5 has been reimaged. No IP or other ID has been attached to this invoice, so it could be any server but mine. LT discarded my request to identify by IP the sever having been reimaged, neither did Tom D. provide any corroborating info in this respect.
In short, I lost all data - because even though Tom said they were transferred to the second disk - no access has been given to me to download the cpmove tarballs.
I have given big credit to Tomsyer, but they failed to act adequately and proved to be a very law-quality company of greedy persons. I will not be astonished if on July 20, my cc will be charged again for the next billing period.
Flumps 07-08-2004, 12:32 PM right ok, first things first i dont work for any of the companies or wish to take part in the debate, i just want to tell you the facts.
1. they colocate at the planet and at manage.com if they aint both one dc anyway :-s
2. if you forget ur root password or make it too hard to remember and u forget your password, the server will have to be reimaged there is no other way of doing it. its like a safe, u cant get in unless u know the number or blow it up.
3. have no idea where that other HDD went, u sure they actually gave you it in the first place?
4. the planet is better then manage.com just my 2 cents.

Wrong. You can get the machine booted up in single user mode I believe, and reset the pw. I've had this done a few times at BurstNet when clients have forgotten their root passwords.

What do you mean by "if they aint both one dc anyway"? Managed.com is in CA, ThePlanet is in Texas.

VapoRub 07-08-2004, 12:51 PM 3. have no idea where that other HDD went, u sure they actually gave you it in the first place?
I have mounted it as a backup and setup WHM to do nightly backups to it.
Here is the thing, I noticed something wrong when I did a routine check per IP to see if I get a cpanel default page. It went blank and I tried my root and it didnt work. Just to think about it, I don't think I forgot the ROOT PW, because I haven't forgotten it for any other server that I have with other DCs.

Then please get your "facts" straight before claiming them as facts.
Tomsyer resells for Layered Technologies & Managed.com. The L-Tech servers are co-located in the Planet DC which is in Texas. The managed.com DC is in California, so no, they are not the same datacenter.
Next, you can, in some cases, regain root access even if you forgot the password without a re-image.
Lastly....he specifically stated he had mounted the backup drive upon delivery and verification. I think that would tell him whether or not it was there.
VapoRub 07-08-2004, 01:00 PM I am not trying to bring a negative image to neither Tomsyer or LayeredTech. I'm just waiting for a honest answer from Tomsyer. It would alot easier if they told me "Ooops" rather than have me wait in the black.
BTW I am still waiting for the 2nd HD. I still can see they gave me a new server.
Flumps 07-08-2004, 06:54 PM i said "thats if they are not the same dc" cause i wasnt sure.
well i hope u get that secound HDD soon buddy. after all i take it ur paying for it to be there when its not. hehe
crspyjohn 07-08-2004, 07:08 PM flumps if your not sure then its not facts...
"i just want to tell you the facts."
Anyways i hope you find abetter company to move to. Anyways i would move away as your server got reimaged randomly? I think they requested a reformat or something. Haha they seem pretty bad from this post reformating servers for no reason. Ask for them for a refund for the missing days or a extended month due to this problem.
TestMan 07-08-2004, 07:19 PM they don't give refunds..
pizzaboy_au 07-08-2004, 08:46 PM Actually Matt they do not resell managed.com servers anymore. They only resell Layered Technologies's Servers.
crspyjohn 07-08-2004, 09:31 PM Err dibellaweb they still resell the old returned managed.com servers :) there was on a few weeks ago in a wht ad :)

Also, I know that they've sent out emails to their Managed.com clients, trying to get them to leave Managed.com for their ThePlanet offerings.

They still have servers there...not everyone has moved over to LT.
pizzaboy_au 07-09-2004, 01:33 AM Yes, you are right they still have servers at managed.com however what i stated was they are not going to be reselling managed.com servers anymore.
VapoRub 07-09-2004, 01:49 AM Tom has contacted me and explain to me what happened. Unfortunately it was a mistake and he assured it will not happen again. Lets see what happens in the next few months.
this thread it is a bit old, but I'll toss in my two cents.
I've only been a customer for a day, but already I'm seeing response problems.
I ordered the celly 2.0 w/ a gig of ram and an 80 gig drive with cpanel around noon yesterday. I was one of the servers that was advertised would be setup in 24 hours.
After ordering I immediately received an e-mail confirming my order and about 30 minutes later I got a call from tom to verify the order. After playing phone tag for about an hour we spoke and confirmed the server and he said that it would be setup within 20 minutes. It wasn't until about 4:45 around 2 hours later that I finally got my setup information.
Now... the site said 24 hours, and it *was* setup within 24 hours, but *Tom* said 20 minutes. It's not a big deal since I'm not in a hurry, but the point is a promise was made and a promise was broken.
I've also got in 3 tickets from this morning that have yet to be answered. One to support to setup monitoring and two to sales to setup xcontroller and clientexec (fantastico is the only 'add on' they'll let you set up yourself.)
I really hope the ticket response times of 24 hours are true, if so I'll be running for the hills
pizzaboy_au 07-15-2004, 03:04 AM Actually Neil i would advise against their monitioring system. I have had a lot of false positives in relation to their systems. The reason i know this is i had my own monitoring services on the server. For example:
Sim - 5 minute monitoring - internal server
Midas - 1 minute monitoring - internal server
Nagios - 1 minute monitoring - external server
and none of these softwares alerted me that any services where down.
well I suppose it doesn't matter about the monitoring system, I received a reply about 6pm yesterday that it would be set up later that evening, we're now more than 24 hours from then and it still hasn't been set up.
My tickets about xcontroller and client exec took 12 hours to get a reply, and xcontroller still doesn't work; it'll probably be about 24 hours to get that fixed.
I'm sending an e-mail regarding ticket response times - if they don't improve I fear I may have to move somewhere else.
jerry12304 07-17-2004, 12:02 AM i only had one problem with them -- i ordered a server and get this, took them 7 non working days (yes 7!) to set it up.
Other that that, no problems.

Midas is this one right? http://freshmeat.net/projects/midas-nms/
What linux are you using to run it?

It's probably a sym link problem. And moreover, Fantastico is not placed in the directory recommended by Kosmo. You have to move it to its proper place, create symlinks and visit the Fantastico Admin for autocorrecting of the links to the other skins.
This is what Kosmo did after I waited long hours for Tom to correct the situation, lose my patience and went to the netenberg.com where Kosmo was kind enough to help me in 15 minutes. You can even see part of our transcribed conversation on his forum and follow his advices.
pizzaboy_au 07-17-2004, 10:48 AM Hi Francisco,
The answer to your question is yes i am talking about midas from freshmeat.net The full url is midas-nms.sourceforge.net
I am running redhat linux 9 with the midas setup. However it should run on any linux.
phark 07-23-2004, 06:34 PM Ordered a server from them (took a little longer than their promised 24hrs, no big deal).
6 hours ago, I submitted a ticket because the login information they mailed me for the server doesn't work.
I've also emailed (3 hours ago) support@tomsyer.net & sales@tomsyer.net... no response.
Do they check their support desk ever or check their emails?
